1/4 I was delighted to be in Syntagma Square, Athens, for the May Day rally. The massacre of civilians there in 1944 is a criminally forgotten episode of WWII. The square remains a shrine for the Greek left. Why? Because of an act of murderous treachery by Winston Churchill.

RTÉ has come out to defend the statement by Patrick Kielty. Needless to say, it’s sheer gaslighting from our taxpayer-funded broadcaster. Holocaust Awareness Ireland did not say that Patrick *justified* the attacks. They remarked on his lack of empathy. And yes, providing a *rationalisation* (distinct to justification) for violence against Jews is lacking in empathy. Mentioning Gaza on the issue of antisemitism in the diaspora is profoundly inappropriate and profoundly lacking in empathy. This is most clear to the hundreds of thousands who watched the clip, but is apparently not clear to our national broadcaster, who could have easily provided an apology knowing that this has caused hurt to the Jewish community in Ireland and beyond. The Jewish people have endured persecution, pogroms, and an industrial scale genocide before Israel was reestablished as a modern State. There was always a rationalisation for antisemitism historically; we should have learned that no rationalisation should ever be provided for it in the present. RTÉ is an utter, utter disgrace. Shameful.

4/4 The massacre is thought to be the only example of Allied forces attacking allies. It led to the ‘White Terror’, (1945-46), the savage suppression of anti-Nazi partisans by the British and the Greek far-right, then escalated into the Greek Civil War (1946-49). Έξω οι φασίστες.

3/4 The ranks of Churchill’s new allies were replete with recent Nazi collaborators allowed to remain in situ. Churchill cared only that they weren’t leftists. From the roofs of buildings around the square, the Greek fascists/British opened fire, slaughtering 28, injuring 100+.
