One case I will never forget walked into my office wrapped in fear instead of understanding.
Her family believed she was an ogbanje.
They said she talked to people who were not there.
She laughed at odd hours.
Sometimes she locked herself in her room for days. Other times, she insisted strangers were following her.
Everywhere they went, they were told it was spiritual.
By the time she came to me, she looked exhausted.
Not because of the voices she described.
But because nobody had asked her what she was actually experiencing.
As we spoke over several sessions, it became increasingly clear that what the family had been calling an ogbanje was far more consistent with schizophrenia than a spiritual phenomenon.
I still remember the relief on her face the day she realized someone was finally listening to her instead of simply fearing her.
Be Mindful.
