@Ga1tJohn @BareReality It is not. Hospice and palliative care do NOT hasten dying
English

@BareReality All the assisted dying bill is doing is legalising what is already happening. "End of life care" is defacto assisted dying
English

I have two elderly relatives with terminal diagnoses. I would not want them to see a health professional for vital care if they were to be offered ‘assisted dying’ as well — and make no mistake they would be if it becomes law.

Should doctors and nurses be able to suggest assisted suicide? Here's what Sarah from Perth thinks.
English

@somuchhappenin_ Experts will tell you that the doctrine doesn’t apply to using opioids to relieve suffering in palliative care scenarios. Numerous studies have shown that opioids do not hasten death in these circumstances. Besides, 12 mg/hour is not a super high dose of morphine.

doctrine of double effect - so much to unpack with this advice. do they tell Roxie that there is an extremely negative side effect. The humane thing to do is to alleviate the extreme pain.

@DavidWolfe Palliative doc here. I have a lot of work already @DavidWolfe
English

@rosemartland @NightShiftMD the medicine is mostly real. the dynamics are totally amped up.
English

@NightShiftMD I'm not medical staff, but what I like about The Pitt is the realism. I assume the medical info is accurate; Patient experience certainly is. Interpersonal stuff is also messily realistic. Love the time flow.
This is also what I liked about the first few seasons of ER.
English

I'm looking for some quick feedback on Season 2 of #ThePitt. What do you like? How realistic is the medicine? What are your takes on the characters? All impressions welcome. ER healthcare providers' feedback especially welcome.
English

@sarahkbingler @NightShiftMD I was pretty disappointed that they didn't use palliative care consultants, etc in that storyline.
English

@NightShiftMD As an #OT who covers the ED I was a little grumpy when the doctors were shown prescribing home equipment for the NWB palliative patient who was going home. I get that they probably don’t want to write a new character just for that scenario.
English

@NightShiftMD The show is great and shows many important facets of health care. BUT I am disappointed in the Louis storyline. He had a terminal illness, no one talked to him about that. His goals of care were never addressed. They could highlight palliative care, but don't.
English

The notion humans who never made any conscious decisions whatsoever deserve to be tormented for eternity is transparently depraved & idiotic, but some folks committed to a version of the gospel that painted them into a rhetorical corner that forces them to pretend it’s just.

@ClayHorshimer13 @maklelan You’ve replied hundreds of times in the last 24 hours. You either have waaaay too much time on your hands or you are a….. bot
English

@maklelan I can't imagine being a grown-up and thinking Biblical slavery = 1600's-1800's slavery.
English

Christianity sure did progress with society when the latter decided slavery was evil. The Bible condones it from beginning to end. Took a few centuries, but Christianity eventually came around.

Progressive Christianity isn't Christianity.

@cspotweet -9 C is not cold. It was -30 today in Winnipeg with wind added. I zipped up my jacket but didn’t bother with gloves.

@WestJet I am told my bag is being delivered, but I still do not have my bag or a delivery appointment
English

@Dr_Tim_MD Tim, we are so sorry your bag is still not with you, are you calling the Central Baggage Services team-CBS directly at 1-866-666-6224?
English

@WestJet
You lost my bag, you got my delivery address wrong and I can’t fix it. Answer the phone! Come on guys!

@Will_W_Welker @CaulfieldTim That statements requires evidence, but you have none, because it is false.
English

@CaulfieldTim Humans lie Tim. Scientific experts exist but for every good one, there are nine thieving liars.

English

@howertonjosh So that must mean you have given all of your wealth to feed the poor. No? Alrighty then.
English

"Shouldn't Christians support max-boosting welfare programs, because Jesus said to feed the hungry and the early church was marked by generosity to the poor?"
1) No, using the government to forcefully take other people's money against their will and redistribute it was not a mark of the early church.
They were generous to the poor, A) with their own money, and B) of their own volition. And yes, individual Christians and churches SHOULD do that!!
2) Although a thin social safety net for the most dire circumstances is permissible, there are *no* examples in the Bible of God commanding (or affirming) governments to take money from earners and redistribute it to take care of people in the Bible.
Sometimes, people will (mistakenly) point to OT gleaning commands as an example of Biblical "welfare", but notice those are commands are given to individual Israelites. They are not an example of centralized government redistribution of wealth.
There's a reason for this...
3) There is a difference in the Bible between the role of the individual and the role of the State.
It is evil and harmful when an individual does the role of the State (i.e., taking personal vengeance for a crime rather than letting the State enact justice).
And it is evil and harmful when the State does the role of the individual and the church (i.e., stealing from people via excessive taxation to take on the primary role of charity in a society in place of individuals and churches).
It's harmful because with governments "you always get more of what you SUBSIDIZE and less of what you PENALIZE."
This is why when governments do "charity", it tends to PRODUCE more poverty in that region rather than ALLEVIATE it over time, because the government has removed the incentives for hard work and ingenuity in society. (A good portion of the population thinks, "Eh, why get out and grind, the government will cover me.")
And this is why it actually requires a form of evil and is very harmful for a government to be subsidizing 40M people (12% of the entire population) via food stamps.

@doclauravater There are cures out there but they aren’t money makers for conventional oncology and pharmaceutical companies! They are going to teach you about them in medical school, which is funded by pharmaceutical companies! Check out the work of @MakisMedicine if you’re willing to learn!

@manitobahydro @cityofwinnipeg
I have been waiting for 8 months for an electrical service upgrade for my home. A lack of coordination between MB Hydro and the city of Winnipeg the only reason.
English

Great challenges offer great opportunities. Canada, including Manitoba can offer a great place for disheartened US academics, but MBGov must step up and offer funding to make it possible!
