Urgent Appeal to Address Unfair Airfare Discrimination Against Northeastern Citizens
Dear @DGCAIndia @rashtrapatibhvn @IndiGo6E @AirIndiaX @airindia @raghav_chadha,
I am writing to bring to your attention the soaring airfares for flights en route to the Northeastern region of India, particularly the Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal/agartala; Kolkata-Guwahati/Imphal/Aizawl sector. This issue has not only highlighted a glaring disparity but also raised concerns about systematic economic exploitation and discrimination against the people of the Northeast.
To provide perspective:
•A flight from Delhi to Jaipur, with a similar travel time of 55 minutes, is priced at ₹4,000-5,000 even during the festive season.
•In stark contrast, a Guwahati-Imphal flight of shorter duration (45-55 minutes) costs ₹10,000-11,000.
This discrepancy is deeply troubling, especially given the circumstances faced by the people of Manipur. Since May 2023, armed Kuki immigrant groups have disrupted the national highways, making road travel between Guwahati and Imphal nearly impossible. For many regular travelers, the airfares used to be as low as ₹3,200-4,500, but the current exorbitant charges leave citizens with no affordable alternatives.
This situation is not just an economic burden but a clear case of neglect by both the state and central governments, who have failed to alleviate the suffering of the Manipuri people. The unchecked profiteering by airline companies must be addressed immediately to prevent further financial strain on citizens already grappling with significant hardships.
We appeal to airline companies to:
1.Recognize the extraordinary circumstances that have disrupted road connectivity and consider the financial strain on passengers.
2.Revisit and rationalize airfare pricing for the Northeastern sector, particularly for Delhi/Kolkata-Guwahati-Imphal flights, to make travel affordable for the average citizen.
3.Introduce special discounted fares or subsidies during this time to support the people of the region, who rely heavily on air travel as the only viable mode of transport.
We urge the government and regulatory authorities to take the following actions:
1.Investigate the reasons behind the inflated airfares for the Northeastern sector.
2.Implement measures to regulate airline pricing, ensuring affordability for ordinary citizens.
3.Take immediate steps to ease the mobility crisis faced by the people of Manipur.
The people of Manipur deserve fairness and equality, not exploitation during their time of need. We hope this matter will be treated with urgency, and we look forward to concrete actions from both the government and airline companies to restore trust and fairness.
