I had an idea of starting random bullshit programming paradigms. Pick a concept and say everything must be it now. "If-Oriented Programming - everything is an if", "Loop-Oriented Programming", "Thread-Oriented", "Variable-Oriented", etc. No matter what I pick it sound totally like something HN normies may get hyped up about. That's how fucked up programming culture is rn.

TWO MAJOR CZECH LEGISLATIVE CHANGES AGAINST ESPIONAGE This week, Czech Chamber of Deputies agreed on two significant legislative changes: 1) Czechia stops allowing dual citizenship to Russian citizen due to security concerns. If you want to get Czech citizenship, you must give up the Russian one. There will be exemptions for children or politically relevant cases. Czech Interior Ministry says there is 40 000 Russians living in Czechia legally, using temporary or permanent residence status. Between 2019 - 2022, Russian citizen got 20 % of new Czech citizenships out of all foreigners applying, even increased in 2023 by 5 %. 2) New criminal offence in Czech penal code established: „Unauthorised activity for a foreign power“. Punishable by up to five years in prison (eight in exceptionally grave cases) are those who „carry out activities for a foreign power on the territory of the Czech Republic with intent to endanger or damage the constitutional establishment, sovereignty, territorial integrity, defence or security of the Czech Republic or the defence or security of an international organisation to the protection of whose interests the Czech Republic has undertaken to protect.“ It also covers „violating the sovereignty of the Czech Republic by monitoring by intelligence means the inhabitants of the Czech Republic on its territory on behalf of a foreign power, or „ a citizen of the Czech Republic or a stateless person who has been granted permanent residence in the territory of the Czech Republic who, with the intention referred to in point (a), carries out activities for a foreign power outside the territory of the Czech Republic“. Since Czech espionage law punishes only stealing classified information, but it is clear that Russian or Chinese intelligence agencies have other tasks - such as surveilling individuals, profiling targets for recruitment or engaging in influence operations. That will now be prosecuted.

I'm making a Bot where users define Custom Commands that execute Scripts in a Custom Turing-Complete Language. For Security Reasons I don't want to let the users define scripts that Run Forever. How can I check that Scripts will Never Finish Before Running them?

Or you know, just open up an issue report, like most devs would. I really don't understand why some folks are mostly interested in putting down others' work (which they got for free btw) instead of being constructive. Or you know, do your version that uses docusaurus.
Alex Loukissas 🍉@aloukissas

People love hexdocs but they don't even have basic search working. What is with the @elixirlang community being allergic to using best-in-class tools (e.g. docusaurus in this case) and with the huge Invented-Here Syndrome? Yes you can build docs sites in elixir. Should you? No.

In this country (Poland) we have 3 parallel healthcare systems: 1. Public healthcare, where the state is the only insurance provider. The hospitals, doctors and labs that are contracted are either private or public, most "first contact" healthcare, i.e. your family doctor, would be employed by a private company but paid from public insurance. Visits here are free, and you get subsidized prescription drugs, often 100% or 90% of drug cost is covered by the state. Downsides are the usual: queues, short opening hours, overworked doctors etc. If your toddler is developing fever you'd better call in to have appointment and then cancel, because the nearest open slot will be in 2 days. This sort of thing. Hospitals are a mixed bag. Some are great, others are so bad people refuse to ride there in an ambulance even in emergency. 2. Private health insurance. Supposedly alternative to above. Hospitals have better food, nicer rooms. The queues are shorter. The family doctor situation is usually not much different from public healthcare. They also want to upsell you on extra stuff not covered by insurance at all times. Visit to specialist is often as difficult and scheduled in future as 1. 3. Out of pocket, private healthcare. Short, if any at all, wait time for appointment, doctors that have time for you, often PhDs. Fully capitalist system, where the patient chooses, even on each visit. The doctors care. They want you to come back to them. They want you to recommend them to your friends. They will check on you via text if you go silent and miss the check up. Only 3. works well, in normal situations. Private insurance (2) sucks, because you are tied to provider. There are not many of them, so competition is limited. And you do not switch between providers at will. The prices for a visit vary. I just paid $40 for a specialist visit. I am sure a cardiologist professor with 30 years experience charges like $100, maybe more. After dealing with all 3, I strongly believe most normal visit to doctors should be within 3. You choose as a customer, you pay, you receive the service. They should care about you. And systems 1 and 2 do not guarantee you that at all. There certainly is a place for health insurance. Also for charities. You probably cannot afford chemotherapy out of pocket, it can cost you $10k or more per month (still several times less than in USA, by the way). But the fact that public health care covers all visits, even dentists, just means people are getting bad service. Most doctors visits should be out of pocket, because that works for patients best.

We've long suspected that Spotify was recruiting fake artists and juicing them in its algorithm and placing them on the most popular playlists. Liz Pelly collected the internal docs + other evidence to finally prove it.

AKIRA THE DON
AKIRA THE DON@akirathedon·
Streaming platforms have been flooding popular playlists with fake artists for years For example, I pioneered the Lofi Christmas subgenre, and I made the very first Lofi Christmas playlist on the biggest streaming platform back in 2017. It had my music and that of other OG real lofi artists on it, and was hugely popular, getting 10s of millions of streams for the songs I put on there The platform noticed, and next year made their own "official" playlist. It kept a handful of my songs, and some of the OG artists, and introduced some "new" artists, that no-one had ever heard of The year after, myself and the OG lofi artists were almost entirely expunged from the "official" playlist, which was now almost entirely comprised of "new" unheard of, cookie-cutter, production line "lofi" artsists that all sounded the same... ...meanwhile, my own hugely popular pioneering Lofi Christmas playlist stoped showing up in search Now, there are multiple "official" playlists, and they have zero music from myself or any of then OG lofi artists, and are full of what sounds like glossy AI supermarket music with beats Regardless, I have continued to make amazing new Lofi Christmas albums every year, that people love very much, and have become a tradition for many families at Christmastime Relying on Platform Playlists is a mug's game, obviously The casino always wins
