@cirsova I got legitimately excited when he announced his "Board James" video series because I'm a board game nerd who liked making fun of traditional American board games. Then the whole series was just skits themed on the games.

@The_Lord_Otter I find AI always wants me to "tighten up" segments that I have specifically written to achieve a certain style and flow.

I won't say that revising your writing with AI necessarily "ruins" it. One thing it goes a long way to doing, however, is sterilizing it. AI revision is the gross sum of every mainstream editor one could ever think of, and though it is malleable to your story, one still runs the risk of making it sound homogenous. Keep in mind that AI runs off patterns from vast amounts of training data. That doesn't necessarily make it good or bad, nor is it always correct. Rather, it's just a little closer to being derivative of everything else that's out there.

@AlysssaHazel @kenzietuff Reminds me of a guy I dealt with once who had a brain injury from Iraq and no filter. His idea of a ice-breaker with a female cashier was, "You're so pretty I bet you've been gang-r*ped."

@seanthomas85 @T_Hates_Cali @k_mahlburg I had brutal childhood depression and constant fatigue (probably from undiagnosed sleep apnea). I felt super disconnected from traditionally masculine activities and tendencies. When I saw a character get a sex changed on a TV show, I thought it might be an escape.

@T_Hates_Cali @k_mahlburg Resonates. I was tubby, unathletic, physically weak, emotionally fragile. Labeled a "sissy" for most of grade school. I might have leapt at the idea that "maybe I'm actually a girl inside."

Finland tracked every gender-referred adolescent in the country for up to 25 years. Their psychiatric needs didn't improve after 'gender reassignment'. They surged. A landmark peer-reviewed study just dropped. Here's what it found. 🧵

The unofficial sequel to this is the time another woman called to ask a couple questions about keeping a rooster which included: "And—I'm so stupid—how do the eggs even get fertilized? Like…does the hen lay them and then the rooster comes along and…does something to them?"
Wren Scarborough🪉✨@wrenscarborough

One time in my years working at a country store, I answered a call from a woman who said she was having a problem with her chickens, and could I help her? I said I'd try, and what was the problem? She said, "My rooster keeps jumping on my chickens. Is that normal?"

@wrenscarborough I listened to an Actual Play Podcast where the DM stated that a Roc had laid four unfertilized eggs and was looking for a male to fertilize them. Nobody at the table questioned this.

@RuneK2015 @Fiannawolf2 "Just don't be political, bro," says the guy living in a culture where everything is politicized, including the race, sex, and sexuality of the author.

@DrellWilliam @Fiannawolf2 Yes, but that doesn't mean a Mike Hammer couldn't exist in a modern setting. What it does mean is that modern writing doesn't work when its subsumed by modern politics, which we all know is always bad anyway.

@RuneK2015 @Fiannawolf2 Mike Hammer could machine gun a room full of commies and have mass appeal. Realistic modern action heroism would end up as a culture war casualty.

@Fiannawolf2 But no one is trying to do "what would a pulp look like today?" "How would we go on bold adventures and face daring villains today?" The closest we get are things like Jack Ryan and Reacher, and their heroes even if awesome have feet made of genre clay.

That is NOT the way to sneak past the TSA. That is the way to get your luggage deep searched and also maybe a pat down or more. There have been complaints.

Fiannawolf, Questing for the Superversive.
Basic metric before I head off to work. Most of Pulp Rev ect didnt even make it onto Razor fists radar and that guy loves the Shadow. It was a drop in the bucket and the wave passed it by.
Robert Kroese@robkroese

@Fiannawolf2 Your original statement was "Pulp Revival failed b/c everyone wanted to be some form of Conan." I understand there was a lack of variety. What I'm asking is, by what metric did PR fail, and how does that relate to a lack of variety?

@jerrythom11 @Fiannawolf2 "The Long Goodbye" was dreary and meandering, but still a solid read. I think it resulted in the worst screen adaptation of the character, though.

@DrellWilliam @Fiannawolf2 Its like that...one every page, just great prose with such a instinct for human sentiment. Chandler was beat down. Struggled with alcoholism his whole life, later wrote about it, with the same careful prose, in "The Long Goodbye", which is the weakest work, his pathos breaks away

“There’s very little that I can eat and my sleep is so close to waking that it is hardly worth the name. I seem to exist largely on heat, like a newborn spider, and the orchids are an excuse for the heat. Do you like orchids?” “Not particularly,” I said. The General half-closed his eyes. “They are nasty things. Their flesh is too much like the flesh of men. And their perfume has the rotten sweetness of a prostitute.” -The Big Sleep

@DrellWilliam @Fiannawolf2 Chandler would insert these turns of phrases, Bukowski level of humor. McCarthy is almost pulp but he has such a great, taut minimalist style, which I like I really enjoyed Raymond Carver, who is not pulp, and REH wrote great action.

@DrellWilliam @Fiannawolf2 Spillane was huge for awhile, I would include the Western writers, L'Amour. Karl May, a German writer, turn of the century, is not well known either. Its a larger catagory than novels, it includes Film Noir, and many TV shows.

@DrellWilliam @Fiannawolf2 No, and I missed the "Porter" novels, and a variety of other great stuff. I did read Tarzan, up to the Jewels of Opar, all of REH, HPL, all the McGee novels...and Hammett, the BEST writer of them all is Chandler, but its all A stuff, and rankings, for pulp, are kinda lame.

@JoshuaHiles The people who would have bought adventure pulps in the 50's are the people who watch cape-crap and play Call of Duty today. Masculine adventure fiction is now a niche interest.
