That awkward moment when people call you dumb, but then put the English language in a stranglehold for the rest of the tweet. I apologize for any strokes or brain aneurysms sustained while trying to translate this. Also, nice wig Phyllis. You should probably take off the straight blond wig before lecturing me on “white agenda.”

Apparently there’s a NYU commencement dust-up over my dear friend and co-author @JonHaidt. Student government reportedly called to disinvite him, calling his campus critiques too divisive, which rather proves "The Coddling of the American Mind” had a point. And for the record, we never liked the title.
Benjamin Ryan@benryanwriter

NYU professor @JonHaidt, who has stood at the forefront of the movement to challenge academia’s culture of suppressing the free exchange of ideas, is facing a campaign to cancel his graduation address. nytimes.com/2026/05/13/us/…

A former student—probably in her 30s now—unfollowed me on Facebook after a civil debate on trans women in sports. She was stridently for including all trans women, no compromises. Her parting line, "I’m realizing that you’re unwilling to receive new information on this topic that may go against your preconceived notions." Yes, that did seem to be the problem.

If you've got the time, risotto is great. But it means stirring and fussing over rice for ~20 minutes straight. If you're watching carbs, spaghetti squash with some kind of white sauce is fantastic. Slice lengthwise, scrape out the guts, oil and salt the interior, then roast face down at ~425 F for 20-25 minutes. Fork test on the skin, if it caves easily, it's ready. Cool and then scrape out the flesh for instant "keto spaghetti." Underrated side: sauteed greens. Arugula, spinach, etc. Sautee onions and garlic in olive oil, add the greens 'til just wilted, squeeze in some citrus and serve immediately.

Their 11-year-old daughter went on a class trip—only to discover that her hotel roommate (and expected bedmate) was a boy. Today we’re representing them & other CO parents at the 10th Circuit. Kids deserve privacy on overnight trips. Parents deserve the chance to protect them.

And there's the problem... you look at that and think: "That will cause problems for society! It's bad!" But that's not the right question. Will that cause bigger problems than impoverishing the education of almost everyone else in a desperate attempt to save them?

Hear me out: Whenever I bring up suspensions or expulsions, the response is “but what are we going to do with those kids?” as if it’s the fault of the system That’s on the parents. They bear final responsibility for that kid, not the school. And other students shouldn’t have their own learning jeopardized because a few children were poorly parented.

Brett Kavanaugh, a man in his 50s, had been valedictorian of his high school, at Yale College and a star student at Yale Law, had clerked for the Supreme Court, had a top career as an appellate lawyer and federal judge and a pristine reputation, and then a random woman from the town he grew up in claimed he had groped her at a party 35 years earlier when they were in high school. Kavanaugh didn’t try to argue that the incident was consensual. He didn’t claim he remembered things differently than she did. He immediately stated that he had never even met the accuser. Denying ever meeting the accuser is a much stronger claim than merely denying assaulting her, and much easier to refute. After Kavanaugh made this denial, Christine Blasey-Ford no longer had to prove he had sexually assaulted her to scuttle his nomination, she only had to prove that the two of them had attended a party together at which such an assault might have occurred. She was unable to do so. She did not know whose house the alleged assault occurred at. None of the people she claimed attended the party corroborated any aspect of her account. Leland Keyser, a friend of Blasey-Ford’s, who the accuser claimed was at the alleged party, said she recalled no such event and had never met Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh produced a detailed calendar he had kept during the summer Blasey-Ford alleged she was assaulted, which included his whereabouts of every weekend night and listing who he was with. Kavanaugh argued that he could alibi himself and provide witnesses for any night Blasey-Ford claimed she might have been at a party with him. Blasey-Ford responded that she did not know the date of her assault and was not entirely certain it even occurred that year. Instead of being seen as persuasive, Kavanaugh’s calendar was mocked in both mainstream and social media because the reason he kept it was for a drinking contest he was having with his friends. Nearly a decade later, there is still not a single shred of proof or a single witness who will corroborate the claim that Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey-Ford were ever in the same room before she testified at his confirmation hearing. Nonetheless, people like Nick Kristof still claim Kavanaugh was “credibly accused” of sexually assaulting this woman.

This is just silly. We "control people's bodies" all the time when we say "You can't use your body to murder, steal, etc." The key word there is "just." The implication that the control is the point, rather than the necessary cost of preventing murder.

Why is accepting that someone can believe that climate change is happening, but that the apocalyptic prognostications are hysterical and most of the proposed "solutions" are, at best, value-neutral or, at worst, counterproductive such a personal issue to so many people? Is your mother a wind turbine?

This has gotten a lot of pro-Trump deranged replies.😂 The most annoying genre of these is "Trump is just a regular Republican. You Democrats are always like this." It's blind to say that the only complaint his opponents have is "Orange Man BAD!" There is a long list of ways in which Trump is NOT a business-as-usual Republican, but his fans ignore them. I'll leave you with the analysis of a more mainstream Republican after hearing Trump's first inauguration speech in 2017: "That was some weird shit." — George W. Bush
Carl@HistoryBoomer

On TDS... What if, and give me some rope here, what if Trump is actually very, very bad, and being very upset about that is reasonable, not deranged?

@SenSanders Bernie still can't math. The $25 billion that those 600,000 worker cost -- assuming just $40,000 per year per employee) -- is 40x more than the $630 million you just complained about.
