Scoring ability and the golf swing are two separate skills, IMO. There is plenty of overlap between the two, but there is a lot more that goes into scoring than just the quality of your technique.

I’ve gotta comment on @KVanValkenburg’s latest “viral” piece about Jon Rahm & KVV’s dissatisfaction with the game of professional #golf. I think his piece was pretentious, short-sighted & blind on a variety of fronts. Shocking for @NoLayingUp, I know. 😂 He tries to equate the number of viewers in golf to other popular spectator sports in the US. He specifically cites college football. Let’s just completely ignore that college football is completely irrelevant internationally, which blows up his premise, but I digress. NBA is probably a better indicator (lower US ratings, but higher int’l engagement) but it wasn’t used. This fails to recognize that the economics of viewership in golf are completely different than football & basketball. As a football/bball fan, you’re not spending hundreds/thousands of dollars every year on equipment & greens fees that you are in golf. Paying for club memberships. Paying a premium in housing to live in a golf community or on a golf course, etc. The scale of the economy of each viewer in golf carries dramatically more value/weigh (on average) than that of football & basketball viewers. That’s the intrinsic value that’s baked into golf. That matters. Amateur Golfers are inspired by the professionals (now also YouTubers & other personalities) to start playing the game or get out on the course, range more. It’s why bifurcation was the worst idea that’s ever been floated around in golf. And frankly, it’s the stars that drive this value. I played Nike equipment for a long time almost solely because Tiger did. It’s why the intrinsic value of the stars is so high. Bifurcation puts a wet blanket on all that, so I’m glad that idea was torpedoed. You can argue that Tiger & Phil inspired more people to play golf than the rest of the golfers the last 25 years, combined. The next tier of players is a huge chunk as well. Their value is extremely high. Probably underpaid tbh. I haven’t heard any of the golf media recognize this or talk about it. This is partially why Saudi Arabia now, and UAE before that, and desert golf in the SW United States before that, wanted to invest in golf. The game is still the same, just with different players. But what do I know? I’m just a “LIV bot” trying to “farm engagement.” Sure. 😂

The Tour Championship could really use a jolt of energy. Here’s an idea to give the tournament its own identity and make it a better product for the fans. Which, as this whole NewCo thing moves forward, needs to be the focus.
