I heard about this some time ago & was tipped off that it might be announced after Birkdale. @asiantourgolf 100% has to do what it feels is right for them. But like I told AT officials, it’s short term like the Aussie Open deal (thru 2029) - but what happens after? What’s the status of the @DPWorldTour “strategic alliance?” It’s all “strategic” by the @PGATOUR - it’s certainly not because they care about growing global golf & they can pull the plug when convenient - and they will. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Thinking on the @asiantourgolf news for a bit before posting anything because I wanted to digest what it actually means regarding LIV Golf and the game on a global scale. The first thought for everyone seems to be that it's pretty bad news for LIV, and obviously this comes at an especially bad time for them. I mostly agree with that, though only to the extent that it affects their OWGR status, which at this point is unknown. It's part of the "criteria" that they must have mobility between an approved tour, so they most likely lose a box that was previously checked. Criteria is in quotes there because they aren't really requirements and everything with OWGR is discretionary, so that side of things is all still TBD. There's really not much of an argument to be made that, outside of OWGR, the Asian Tour partnership was a necessary pillar of LIV Golf. The elevation/promotion of the International Series was tremendous for the Asian Tour, tremendous for the game of golf, and served as a great pathway into the highest levels of the game. On the flip side, this came as a great expense. This partnership was costing LIV ~$30 million dollars a year. Even in a best case scenario, that wasn't going to be in the budget for LIV 2.0 for at least a couple of years. The Asian Tour really had no choice but to look for other avenues to continue their growth. The national opens played under the Asian Tour had also become part of the pitch to investors at some level. It wasn't in the original plan, but it did serve as a potential option for LIV Golf in their path to profitability that they would have sold to investors. To what extent they were pushing that is unknown, which means the impact is also unclear. As for the Asian Tour, a partnership with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour on paper seems like a no-brainer. Upward mobility for their best talents through the established golf world. The problem is that the PGA Tour, as we've seen with the DPWT, has no problem hamstringing other tours for their own short term benefit. The strategic alliance with the DP World Tour also looked great on paper, and has turned out to be disastrous. The DP World Tour is a stronger tour than the Asian Tour, both talent wise and financially, so they're still able to survive a one-sided formalized annual talent-drain to their biggest competitor. I worry that the Asian Tour could be headed in the same direction and they might not be able to survive. The PGA Tour has been iffy on the strategic alliance and doesn't want to keep funneling money into the DP World Tour. The same mentality towards the Asian Tour could see a drastic decrease in events, purses, and opportunity. There's still a ton of moving parts and seemingly a lot of aspects of these deals are still being worked out, so maybe some of the potential downsides here could get sorted out before it becomes detrimental to the game as a whole.

Multiple LIV Golf players have told me they do not expect the Team Championship in Michigan to go ahead, and nobody within the league has been able to confirm whether it will be played. Martin Kaymer told Ben Parsons of Today’s Golfer that’s there’s just a 5% chance they will complete the final event of the season. Story in quoted tweet.

The author isn’t actually concerned about golf’s future. He’s worried that golf’s future isn’t being written by people like him anymore. And he’s smart enough to hide that pretentiousness behind words like “history” and “tradition”. “The the dumbest possible acolytes.” “Newly minted golf fan.” “Ignorance or lack of interest in its history.” So you have to be dumb or ignorant to appreciate DeChambeau? He’s not worried about kids throwing tantrums. He’s terrified that millions of people are falling in love with golf without his permission. Without reading the right books. Without genuflecting at the proper altars. The Caddyshack reference kills him here. He invokes a movie about the exact thing he’s doing.
