I just don't understand the growing obsession with highrise living. First it was the Broadway Plan inappropriately allowing 18-storey towers that will destroy leafy, duplex lined streets in Kitsilano and Mt. Pleasant. And now this.

Last week we explored a 6 storey, single-lot, single-stair apartment building concept, to see what might be unlocked by building and zoning code reform.

New York's 5th Ave is undergoing a major redesign that will widen sidewalks by 50%, shorten pedestrian crossings, reduce travel lanes from 5 to 3 and add plantings & lighting. The project is projected to pay for itself in 5 years through increased property & sales tax revenue.

@michaelgeller If a developer is going to block bust an existing stable neighbourhood at least he can offer something better than a dreadful excuse for a building like this. The UDP would have laughed this out of the room. Professionally, of course.

Sadly, Vancouver's excellent planning progress over the past five decades now appears to be ignored by the current City Council in the name of housing affordability. How affordable? 80% of the 1, 2- and 3-bed apts will be over $3,000/mo. Something has gone terribly wrong.

@CityHallWchVAN 3-storey Sophia Court has 32 units of affordable rental housing. 20% of the 138 units of the 20-storey #BroadwayPlan tower means 27 units of "below market rental" - not even enuf to for all the present tenants of the Sophia if they exercise their right to move into the new tower.
