There have always been midwit lobotomized celebs who because of their bottomless need for attention and approbation are motivated to engage in these little performances but recently I feel an increasing sense of claustrophobia: everything is contained within the internet. You can see these ideological narratives bubble up online and then they’re parroted insentiently by ‘celebs’ who seem more and more like mannequins. People in daily life will parrot stuff similarly. It’s not even the content of what’s she’s saying that’s disturbing so much as it is the sheer volume of social and cultural space that is now filled by unreflexive memetic automatons, that the ‘people we celebrate’ have no reach or capacity to give us anything beyond repackaging the ideological tropes with which we’re already so familiar.

I’ve been feeling this way for a while, but I think it’s time to bite the bullet and admit that I no longer consider myself a liberal. To be clear — my beliefs haven’t changed. Liberalism has — and it’s become something I don’t want any part of. I believe in the importance of the US Constitution, and that no society or religion has the right to oppress people based on sex, race, religion, sexuality, or disability. I believe that everyone has the right to dress however they want, as long as they’re not exposing themselves, and to call themselves whatever they please. I don’t believe they should have the right to force other people to play along, or to self-identify their way into the spaces set aside for the opposite sex. I believe that womanhood is a biological reality, and that women deserve an identity and spaces of our own so that we can safely participate in society. I believe that everyone should be allowed to practice their religion freely and in safety, but religion must not be used as an excuse to deny anyone their agency or their right to fully participate in society. Religious freedom stops where civil rights begin, and no faith has the right to override or overturn civil authority, no matter how devoutly its followers believe. I believe that every human being has the right to live freely and safely, and to pursue their own happiness, with the only limitations being respect for the rights of others. I believe that we’re all in this together, from the wealthiest billionaire to the poorest person on earth, and that the people on the top should take more responsibility for helping the people on the bottom. I believe in the importance of science and logic and reason, and in listening to and having respect for people who don’t agree with me. And somehow, this makes me a fascist.
