@berkie1 @Val_Plante @AvenueMontRoyal Love that stat - but I can't find it documented in the link. Can you post where the stat came from? Thx!

The retail vacancy rate on Montreal’s Mont-Royal Avenue dropped from 14.5% before pedestrianization (2018) to 5.6% after pedestrianization (2023).

@JeffSpeckFAICP But totally worth that photo! In Stockholm try the Jumbo - a jet turned into a hotel and parked AT the airport. We loved the novelty of it a few years ago - and slept surprisingly well given how incredibly acoustically sealed airplane windows are! jumbostay.com

@lalarium @tomflood1 Check out the Retrofitting Suburbia book series: retrofittingsuburbia.com. More than 100 dead malls in the US have already been redeveloped with housing, walkable streets, etc.
English

@tomflood1 Spaces like this are in every city and most towns, yet we don't pack them with humble low cost housing. We rezone existing neighborhoods, fill with expensive housing, pushing residents into affordable SFH in converted green areas.
English

@tomflood1 We are on the same page! But I can't help but think that at least one of Victor Gruen's early malls should receive historic preservation status...
English

@rockstarr666 @aarieff @LondonBreed @sfbos Cities often buy dead malls and then issue RFPs for the kind of development they want to see. My database shows this happening more and more. Although, less so, if it's just one dead dept store.
English

@aarieff @LondonBreed @sfbos The city can't afford to buy that mall and then turn it into housing better if they buy one of the 2 hotels that r in the same boat

@DE_Gifford @kirkpinhoCDB @CityOfWestland @retrofitsuburbs Thanks David. WDET's CultureShift program also thought @williamson_arch and I should be consulted. I hope you caught yesterday's noon hour interview. Over 200 completed dead mall retrofits out there to learn from!
English

That's quite a headline @kirkpinhoCDB. Fortunately malls can be retrofitted. Perhaps @CityOfWestland should contact @DunhamJones, author of @retrofitsuburbs, about how to fix their mall.

Can't wait to hear Dan's insights on using design thinking to solve big problems with small scale housing, carfree design, and attention to microclimates. Video and podcast will be posted at Redesigning Cities.
