I just started watching Ken Burns’s documentary The American Revolution. Knowing his political leanings, I paid close attention to the details. One moment immediately stood out in episode 1. In discussing the First Continental Congress and the delegates from the thirteen colonies, historian Stacy Schiff described them as people essentially from “different countries” and “different religions.” That framing is factually wrong. Distinct Christian denominations are not different religions, and the thirteen colonies were not foreign nations to one another. Presenting them this way subtly reframes the American founding as a product of multiculturalism. This is a soft Marxist reinterpretation of history—one that distorts the reality of the founding era.
