What is a block re-org and what does this mean for Runes? tl;dr - It's like mempool sniping except for miners 🧠 A block re-org is when a miner (or set of miners) ignores a valid block from the network and continues to build their own chain from the previous block. If that miner's chain ends up getting more PoW than the original chain, then we have what's called a re-org. It's easiest to talk about it in an example. Let's say that the halving block is worth $10M to whoever can mine it (in terms of fees + selling the epic sat). It's then clear that as a miner you are VERY incentivized to be the one who mines the halving block. Step-by-Step Example 1. Ocean Mining, who has <1 % of the network hashrate, finds the halving block. They put txs in the block, collect the fees, and broadcast the block to the network. 2. Foundry and Antpool, who make up almost half of the hashrate combined, choose to ignore the block that Ocean broadcast to the network. Instead, they keep trying to find a valid halving block themselves. 3. Let's say Foundry + Antpool find a valid halving block 1 minute after Ocean broadcast their halving block. They don't broadcast this out to the network. Instead, they fill their halving block with transactions and then try to build ANOTHER block on top of their own halving block. 4. If Foundry + Antpool are able to find another block before the rest of the network is able to build on Ocean's block, Foundry + Antpool will broadcast their halving block + next block out to all nodes. 5. Nodes will then say, well, the Foundry + Antpool chain has more PoW than the Ocean chain (which still hasn't found a block after the halving), so the Foundry + Antpool chain is now the default Bitcoin chain. And that's how a re-org happens! Foundry + Antpool would then get to collect the $10M in the halving block, and Ocean's block would become invalid. What does this mean for Runes? Well, if Ocean's block included the etching of DOG*WIF*COIN*HAT as Rune #1, and Foundry+Antpool don't include that etching transaction in their halving block, then DOG*WIF*COIN*HAT has not been etched! Let's say you submitted a mint transaction at 1,000 sats/vB for DOG*WIF*COIN*HAT because you saw that it was etched in the Ocean halving block. That is a valid transaction with a fat fee attached to it. It's possible that transaction gets included in the Foundry+Antpool blockchain, but DOG*WIF*COIN*HAT has yet to be etched there! So your mint transaction is accepted and you lose the fee, but it mints a rune that doesn't exist. This is why everyone is cautioning waiting ~3 blocks before submitting your mint transactions. You might win the lottery, but you also might lose it all. May the odds be ever in your favor.
