@Steven_Swinford @AVMikhailova @benclatworthy UK politics is rubbish, how do kick out a man that won a huge mandate 2 years ago because of a few mistakes and put in a man with no general election mandate just because you feel he can win the next election.

Exclusive from @AVMikhailova and @benclatworthy Sir Keir Starmer will travel to the US to watch England if they make the World Cup final in his last trip as prime minister, hours before tendering his resignation to the King The time difference makes the trip logistically possible - just about. The final kicks off at 3pm local time, meaning it should be complete by 6pm at the latest, or 11pm UK time He would then travel back to the government plane, probably at Newark Liberty airport, departing on the seven-hour overnight trip back to London Starmer would then make his final speech on the steps of Downing Street before travelling to Buckingham Palace to meet the King and recommend that Andy Burnham forms the next government If England beat Argentina on Wednesday plans for a bank holiday on Friday, July 24, will also be announced - but it would be granted only with a World Cup victory The decision to hold it on Friday allows time for businesses to prepare and would probably coincide with a victory parade for the England team thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

England has suddenly become a Mediterranean country: We’ve got roasting hot weather, an economy on its arse, a new Prime Minister every six months and a semi-decent football team.

Well, fancy that. It wasn't just me, was it? The UK's independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, Jonathan Hall KC, told Radio 4 this evening: "I don't know why it appears Devon and Cornwall police were trying to steer away from the idea of terrorism even once they'd discounted the idea of some local burglary that had gone wrong. I simply can't explain that ... I think it's much better to be simply open-minded and say to the public something that's true - 'We don't know what's going on' - rather than appearing to rule something out and then having to reverse their position when new facts emerge."

90% is accurate for people who have tweeted about it, but you're more likely to do so if you think it's an outrage than not seeing it as a big deal so I imagine the % is lower. But I agree, it's not a coincidence... journalists may have a greater understanding of what it's like trying to get answers in the immediate, emotional aftermath of a huge game, and all the pressures that come with that. It's not easy.

I believe the reaction to the whole England journalism stuff reflects a wider societal challenge we have, which is getting things in the middle. As human beings, we tend to overcorrect our mistakes. I think we're all acutely aware of the horrible treatment different players, managers and teams have got in the past, which was engineered by the press and they deserved a lot of criticism for that. But what that means is we're now hyper-sensitive to the media asking what I perceive to be valid, and fairly standard, questions. With that hyper-sensitivity, we're almost doing a disservice to the likes of Tuchel and Bellingham, and their agency as grown men who have chosen to represent our nation, to answer difficult questions as part of that agreement. Yes, you want the media to be on the side of the team, which I do think broadly they are, but it's also their job to be inquisitive, clear things up and attempt to find out what's really going on. Gabriel Clarke was within his rights to ask the tough questions. Thomas Tuchel handled them absolutely brilliantly. Jude Bellingham showed he's got an elite edge, and is not afraid to push back and challenge people in a healthy way. All three came out of it well for me: mountain out of a molehill.

@GabSutton @BenDJ91 I don't just live online. In fact I don't spend much time here. The 90% includes mates and people in the bar where I was watching the match. There's definitely a divide between press and public. Why?

This bit is especially jarring. Why do leftist women do this primary-school-teacher-talking-to-a-small-child act when talking to opponents so often - you see many of the current crop of female Labour MPs doing this a lot. The slow nodding, the blinking, the condescending tone of voice saying “I know/I hear that/of course” over and over. These people are incapable of engaging in debate like a normal human being.
MB@paxangloceltae

Just extraordinary. You could say that the BBC is not responsible for what comes out of this woman’s mouth, but why did Vicky Young not step in and moderate the conversation? To speak of the dead - a murder victim no less - in this manner, and so soon after the victim’s death, is beyond the pale.

@robbopalmer I don't think they're necessary. Most people would rather watch Hey Jude and Wonderwall. Just feels like journos making it all about them.

And no criticism of the post match interview. They are a modern necessity & a thankless task for a reporter Gabriel Clarke is the best. Asks real questions & reacts sharply to replies Bucking the trend of the cosy cheerleading who can have a set of prescribed, soft questions
Rob Palmer@robbopalmer

Superb response by captain Harry Kane who measures his word like his fine finishes. It is Team England despite some media trying to create a divide Tuchel is refreshingly honest Bellingham brilliantly forthright Kane calm & considered No criticism of the post match interviews

@GabSutton @BenDJ91 It's just strange that 90% of the public think Clark was wrong but 90% of journos defending him. Why would that be?

Honestly, I really didn’t see much wrong with it. If I’d seen the reaction first, I’d have expected to see a full interview of manipulation, twisted words and relentless negativity. Could’ve worded things slightly differently, perhaps, but I’ve seen people say he should be sacked for a couple of questions based on a truthful premise. I find the scale of the backlash over the top.

@GOWoodward It's just how this rubbish works. They each agree to take a different side. Jim had to take the wrong side on this one. Probably flipped a coin before they went on air.

Jim White is an absolute twat and he’s either being an obtuse twat or he’s just a thick twat. I’m no fan of Jordan but he’s spot on here, Clarke had his arse in his hands because Tuchel was a bit spiky with him so he decided to stir and he’s also a twat.

It’s not as you say. Heriot-Watt has already filled its quota of Scottish government-funded places for Scottish-domiciled students for the current intake cycle. As a result, it has closed its clearing process to additional Scottish applicants. This is the price you pay for no tuition fees. With no price mechanism to ration places, Scot Gov rations by quotas instead, placing a strict cap on the number of Scots that can go to university. The cap is determined by the size of the budget Scot Gov has allocated to pay for Scottish student places. It is a very bad system. Scottish universities can take as many English and foreign students as they like (they all come with fees) — and they take a lot. But not as many Scottish students as they like. So many miss out.

@JohnBar28691234 @afneil @ChrisBr03460427 @timespolitics Andrew, as an ex uni Rector, any views on this Scottish Uni excluding all Scottish students from a Uni place?

@ArveBard92476 @Ffspurs22 Your only goal was a miss hit cross after a foul. Admit it, if a team can mark EH out of the game you have nothing.

@Ffspurs22 What happens 40 years ago is irrelevant, as the way West Germany was robbed in 1966 is not relevant. Kane is a diver, Madueke is a diver, we knew. Now we also know Anderson and Spence are. So never again complain about anything.

One thing I'd say about the "FIFA are favouring England" brigade. While I think Norway were unlucky with the decisions against England, they are amateurs compared to England when it comes to getting screwed over by officials at world cups.

@Ffspurs22 One thing I will say is that this Norway side had more of a chance than this horrible England side of winning the whole thing. A side with the English Garnacho (Madueke) in their team can’t win the World Cup without help from VAR.

Hear me out: FIFA should let every team on Earth into the World Cup -Start with geographically based groups -Spread the matches out over 2.5-3 years -Have the top 32 or 48 teams from those groups meet in a single country for one last tournament to determine the winner Thoughts?
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthleticFC: Gianni Infantino said FIFA will examine expanding the World Cup by a further 16 nations to a 64-team tournament ahead of its next edition in 2030. The 2030 tournament will be spread across six nations and three continents. nyti.ms/4bjW73o
