This comparison has been made by pro life advocates for decades because both debates ultimately asked the same question: Who counts as a person under the law? History has repeatedly shown the danger of denying the humanity of an entire class of people. The law can recognize personhood or deny it. Biology doesn’t change either way.

❄️❄️❄️❄️ The ethical question isn’t just whether embryo freezing works. It’s what embryo freezing asks a child to endure. Cryopreservation requires an already existing human embryo to undergo vitrification, exposure to cryoprotective agents, storage in liquid nitrogen, warming, and transfer. While modern techniques have improved survival rates, each step carries risk. Some embryos do not survive thawing, and others experience cellular injury. I know because I lived it. I was the only child born from the 20 frozen embryos my parents adopted. That’s why I believe the more ethical approach is to avoid creating embryos who will need to be frozen in the first place. If we truly believe life begins at conception, we should also ask whether freezing an already existing child is in that child’s best interest.

It is never in a child’s best interest to remain frozen indefinitely. Existing in suspended animation for years or decades was never the purpose of human development. If we truly believe children deserve protection from the moment of conception, then we should also ask whether freezing them indefinitely serves their best interests.

I’ve noticed a growing argument that if frozen embryos shouldn’t remain in storage indefinitely, then the answer is simply to thaw them and let them die. I reject that premise. The existence of a difficult ethical problem does not justify intentionally ending a human life. The question shouldn’t be, “How do we get rid of frozen embryos?” The question should be, “What is in the best interest of the child who already exists?”

I was shipped by @FedEx before I was born. Not because I was a package. Because I was a frozen embryo. Today, the legal status of frozen embryos still varies across the country, and many disputes are resolved through property and contract law. The “package” grew up. Maybe it’s time our laws caught up. ❄️📦

As the first adopted frozen embryo in the world, this is a conversation close to my heart. Many families walking into fertility clinics are carrying years of grief, infertility, and longing for a child. They deserve compassion, honesty, and the Gospel. Children conceived through IVF deserve the same.
