❄️❄️❄️❄️ The ethical question isn’t just whether embryo freezing works. It’s what embryo freezing asks a child to endure. Cryopreservation requires an already existing human embryo to undergo vitrification, exposure to cryoprotective agents, storage in liquid nitrogen, warming, and transfer. While modern techniques have improved survival rates, each step carries risk. Some embryos do not survive thawing, and others experience cellular injury. I know because I lived it. I was the only child born from the 20 frozen embryos my parents adopted. That’s why I believe the more ethical approach is to avoid creating embryos who will need to be frozen in the first place. If we truly believe life begins at conception, we should also ask whether freezing an already existing child is in that child’s best interest.

As the first adopted frozen embryo in the world, it’s heartbreaking to see legal systems forced to ask who “owns” children like me after divorce or death. Human beings should never become assets to divide, inherit, or dispose of. The harder these cases become, the clearer it is that we need laws that recognize embryos as human beings deserving protection from the very beginning.

It’s remarkable that federal law protects bald eagle eggs and sea turtle nests. Meanwhile, many frozen human embryos exist in legal uncertainty, and in some jurisdictions or legal contexts they are treated as property rather than persons. That’s a conversation our country shouldn’t avoid.
