Exploring the campus climate for African American and Pacific Islander male athletes reveals ongoing challenges in higher Ed. Both groups face racial micro aggressions, stereotypes and academic hurdles yet they significantly contribute to collegiate sports #UCR150 @abhornUCRedu

African American college athletes don’t receive the same support academically or have the same resources available to them as their peers, putting them at a disadvantage low graduation rates and increasing the chances of retaking courses @annaaacha #ucr150

Every week I’m continually dumbfounded at how the NCAA justifies their mistreatment of collegiate athletes under the guise of amateurism. From the lawsuits to the exorbitant amount of student fees charged to these students every year, when will change be made?@annaaacha #ucr150

“Student-athletes” they are always talked about behind students first but the NCAA allows coaches to overwork their athletes making them have to decide between school/sports they are students first and shouldn’t be belittled for wanting an education #ucr150 @annaaacha

Being a student athlete already comes with a lot of stress, but the NCAA claiming student athletes are part of the student body yet they have restrictions when wanting to transfer to another university, NCAA needs to hold themselves to their own standards @annaaacha #ucr150

The NCAA does not require coaches to be educated about concussions. This puts the athletes they coach at risk of death, even worse brain damage, and life-changing injuries. Coaches should be more educated. #ucr150 @abhornUCRedu

Lack of appropriate knowledge of concussion symptoms should not be a normalized underreporting concussions it can lead to serious problems down the road when undetected and sent back to play I was generally really surprised coaches were letting it happen @annaaacha #UCR150

Student athletes have a significant gap when it comes to having equality. Both genders have the to work for the sport that is important to them but women have to work a little harder while men get all the fundings they need without doing so much. @annaaacha #ucr150

Title IX made incredible progress in women’s sports, there is now 12 intercollegiate aspects where equal treatment takes place but there is still improvements that can be done to be more inclusive and accommodating to everyone like promoting women sports #UCR150 @annaaacha

@reehirmiz @annaaacha I completely agree with you student athletes of color often depend on those scholarships to pay for their education! So schools are taking advantage of a vulnerable group of students to benefit their sports teams @annaaacha #UCR150

I find it realiy interesting that most student athletes of color, specifically Pacific Islanders, consider scholarships to be “year-long contracts with no guarantee of renewal.” @annaaacha #UCR150

Student-athletes being told that once they commit to the college they were offered to play at they will receive a scholarship many a 4 year one but instead it’s a 1 year scholarship which often limits there career choices since they aren’t guaranteed anything! @annaaacha #ucr150

Why is it that the NCAA has decided to control whether they want to expose a college athlete and if so, they keep all the profits? How is it fair for someone else to receive the benefits while the athlete is dedicating its time and effort to earn all of this? @annaaacha #UCR150

@EddieComeaux @UCLALawReview @DrUJayakumar It is really sad to find out institutions favor white and affluent student over those students of color from low income backgrounds. Through loopholes schools admissions aren’t race-neutral, even with programs intended to help students of color, White applicants are privileged.

@mchoc006 @TA_ED50 Hi Maya, I completely agree with you students of color and those disadvantaged aren’t treated the same as affluent white students. Even with race-neutral being implemented in schools white students are preferred and almost always admitted over others @abhornUCRedu #UCR50

"Race-neutral" admissions are hypocritical since they give preference of white. Putting students from other racial/ethnic backgrounds at a disadvantage; for this reason, affirmative action was implemented to provide these students with equal opportunity. #ucr50 @TA_ED50

Institutions are still favoring white and wealthy athletes over those who are disadvantaged. Even with the AxE process created to benefit disadvantaged students. White students are still favored by admissions over anyone. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

Educating athletes about the precautions of being on social media is beneficial than controlling and monitoring them. Athletes are responsible as adults over what they say and act on social media, so controlling them takes the bit of freedom they have. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

The NCAAs amateur principle prohibits athletes promoting themselves and reaching certain goals they may have in the business world things include their name, athletic reputation, and pictures @abhornUCRedu #UCR50
