Well, this is unprecedented. Makes one wonder what exactly they have to hide that they no longer want to be accountable to voters for!!! #democracyfail #onpoli

#BREAKING The Ford government is changing its freedom-of-information law to exclude the premier, cabinet ministers and their offices from FOI requests, removing the public’s access to their records.

This power-grab approach by the Minister undermines public trust, erodes local democracy, and leads to poorer outcomes for students. The Ford gov't cannot claim to be student-focused while dismissing the very people who work the closest with students and families daily. #onpol

The education minister suggests school boards could remain under supervision for years: “until they are on the right path. If it takes us 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 10 years, I don’t care.” He adds no decision yet on if trustees will be on ballots in upcoming municipal elections

It's a drop in the bucket for #onted! “...They’re far from fixing the problem that they’ve created. This is one way that the government continuously tries to distract the public to say we’re taking away $6.3-billion from public education, but then we’re going to give $750 to classroom teachers... they don’t add up.” @spagsmario President of ETFO Greater Essex Teacher Local ctvnews.ca/windsor/articl… #onpoli

Here’s hoping the #onted survey includes open-ended questions so our members can let the Premier and Minister Calandra know, loud and clear, what is missing in public education…and it isn’t just arts and craft supplies, pencils, and tissue paper. MIA: - timely and adequate special education supports and resources - smaller class sizes - a plan to address violence in schools - a plan to address the teacher retention and recruitment crisis

Supply Ontario will handle the purchasing, the Premier pointing out they have bulk purchasing power. Education Minister Paul Calandra says teachers will get a survey today about what kind of items they want to have access to

JOINT RELEASE with @OPSBA and others to remind this government that #onted trustees have a key role in Ontario’s four publicly funded education systems. Without elected trustees, decisions about school closures, special education priorities, student supports, and the use or sale of school land would be made behind closed doors, further away from the communities they affect. TODAY: ETFO is proud to join @OPSBA, @OSTAAECO, @OntAutism, @osstf, @AEFO_ON_CA, and @OPCouncil to call on the government to undertake broad consultations with education partners before advancing any legislative reforms to school board governance. We are united for students, and trustees have a key role in Ontario’s four publicly funded education systems. #onpoli #onted

In response to Ford's $750 classroom supplies announcement today, @etfopresident said, “For years, educators have spent hundreds of dollars of their own money to ensure students have what they need. If the government is finally acknowledging this reality, it’s long overdue. But let’s be clear. Educators cannot be bought, and our commitment to strong public education is not something this government can purchase with a pre‑bargaining announcement. The real issue that needs addressing is this government’s ongoing refusal to address the chronic underfunding that forces educators to subsidize classrooms out of their own pockets in the first place." “Dismantling local democratic oversight would be one of the most consequential changes to public education in Ontario’s history,” said @etfopresident David Mastin. “Removing this accountability puts students at risk, distances families from the decisions that affect their children’s learning, and erodes public trust. Educators and families deserve more than unilateral reforms made without evidence, consultation, or respect from the minister.” 'Broad consultations' needed before school board reform, urge trustees, unions, students and special education advocates #onted #onpoli thestar.com/news/broad-con… via @torontostar
