This was the beginning of the end for ff7. AC was glorified fanservice/action scenes. Crisis core is retcon after retcon and zack/sephiroth were much better as mysteries.
Of all the tropes they picked, they made Zack into the most uber generic shonen anime protagonist. Granted they did make this while naruto/bleach were at their peak so i wonder if that influenced them.
You can also definitely tell that “tone” and writing get more childish. Did KH release around CC time too?

Hmmm lets have a reality check... Capcom isn't having this problem. Why? Because Capcom in the vast majority of its franchises, honors its target audience.
Why is SE struggling? Because they attempted to trade one fanbase for another. FF7 remake series was made for kingdom hearts fans and ultimately people voted with their wallet and Rebirth grossly underperformed in sales.
Cute metacritic score, too bad it doesn't account for the massive audience that didn't buy the product.

This is why a 1-1 remake of FF7 would not have had similar impact. SE understood that no amount of graphical fidelity could’ve recreated the magic of fans’ OG experience.

So… look i think everyone knows its not a marvel multiverse by definition. But its the same trope, plot device, narrative gimmick, etc…
Calling it a multiverse is just easier than having to breakdown how its a rebranding of the same trope. It doesnt matter how many times the devs try to twist the narrative into a pretzel, its still just a repackaging of the same overused gimmick.
