One of my favourite pieces in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican: a statue that first appears to be a beggar, transforming into an angel as you move around it - by Timothy Schmalz.

Coo loo coo coo, coo coo coo coo! Get in hosers, today's episode of Dave's Car ID Service is taking off for the Great White North with a salute the oddball world of Canadian-spec car models and brands. Pictured airdropping a keg of Elsinore over Toronto: Bob & Doug McKenzie's 1977 GMC Vandura from the Canadian cinematic masterpiece STRANGE BREW (1983). Sadly not a Canada spec item, but there was an era when residents of Canada had a bevy of cars Detroit (more specifically Windsor) made especially for them - albeit minor twists on their American cousins.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

All of the Packers' top free agents are off the board. Here's a look at where their 2027 draft picks unofficially stand. 2nd 3rd 4th 4th (Malik Willis) 4th (Romeo Doubs) 4th (Rashan Gary) 5th 5th (Quay Walker) 6th (Rasheed Walker) 7th Some of those compensatory picks could be boosted another round, depending on playing time, incentives, etc.

@Terraphant @DatzMark @JonahDispatch Understood, but on this example, hasn't common usage changed? I share the frustration at what I see as "wrong" usages going mainstream, but I tell myself that my experience is not the fixed frame of reference.

@E_G_Doherty @DatzMark @JonahDispatch I didn’t say they shouldn’t reflect changes. Indeed, I said they should, but they shouldn’t be the drivers of change. People use dictionaries to determine correct usage, so it’s not helpful if they adopt changes too quickly or use their authority to push ideological preferences.

Watching the Sunday shows, one thing is clear. Both parties, and the entirety of the media from the left to right and everything in-between are united in their refusal to use the word “decimated” correctly.

@Terraphant @DatzMark @JonahDispatch The words that went into Samuel Johnson's dictionary were themselves the product of evolution. A dictionary is essentially a snapshot of language in motion. When broad usage changes, the dictionary must reflect it.

@DatzMark @E_G_Doherty @JonahDispatch Not forever, but they have leaned way too hard into the “language is evolving!” thing. They are supposed to uphold standards AND reflect changes that occur *over time,* but they can’t walk and chew gum simultaneously.

This deal - Rewards Rhyan for stepping in and playing well for GB in 25’ -Prevents GB from having to overpay in a bidding war for free agent centers - Gives them continuity at the center spot - Provides the flexibility to draft more OL without an immediate need

@ArthurMacwaters The juxtaposition of these two stats does not create the inference you may think. 90% of murderers are men, but only a tiny percentage of men commit murders. Only a tiny percentage of people arrested for (any) crime will go on to murder.

Crime is not random Only 0.2% of people ever commit murder, yet **67% of all murders**are committed by people with prior arrests When the crime-inclined people are stopped, the crime stops. You can literally just fix crime by not tolerating people who show a history of being destructive to society. El Salvador is a great example of this

@guypbenson Serious question: why would failing to honor pre-check save TSA money or labor? Doesn't it create more work for TSA to fully screen each passenger?

Legally I’m no “less American” but African Americans sing hymns in their churches that go back to the Underground Railroad when my ancestors weren’t even here. Seems churlish and presumptuous to claim my stake in that history is equal to theirs.
The Alex Nowrasteh@AlexNowrasteh

The “debate” is currently about whether you, me, Vivek, and other native-born Americans are more/less American than others because of how long our ancestors have been here. That’s the modern origin of the goofy “Heritage American” phrase. It may be in service of other policies, but don’t forget the real and deep point the blood and dirt people are making.
