2 Prayers that have changed me. 1: 'Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.' This is done meditatively and complitatively by breathing in the breath of life 'Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God...' that I may bear His image in me and to breath out my true sacrifice of a contrite heart '...Have mercy on me, a sinner' emptying myself humbly before Christ. Through this prayer I am recentered away from my anxious self. It keeps me humble and embolden me against the demons. Sometimes when I have a bad dream I'll pray it in my dream and immediately the dream becomes peaceful. 2: 'Oh Holy Theotokos save us/(me)' When I am self loathing or feeling lonely, this prayer has never failed to bring a warm gentle embrace over my soul like a mother comforting her child. I am filled with love and a sense of being merciful to myself and others.

all that money for baptism orthodox ceremonies and i have yet to meet or know about a priest who owns a private jet, has a mega church of people who tithe thousands of dollars, or is considered to be one of the top millionaire pastors in america like Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, Steven Furtick and the like.

In light of my explanations of the reason for parish donations and costs for baptism and memorial services and weddings, I believe people are confusing paying for the operating costs of the people involved with paying for the blessed sacraments themselves. Priests that demand a fee are sinning. Second, parishes must endeavour to be clear about their operating costs and why they charge what they do. Even a markup for their services must be clear that it’s not a bar to engage with God’s grace. I know this because on the ground, priests do not charge their parishioners for baptisms or otherwise but the confusion arises from people that don’t attend the parish simply searching up a church on their website. To mitigate this, priests and their parish councils must endeavour to not appear money hungry, but at the same time be honest to the apostolic call that those that serve at the temple should be compensated for their service so that they can entirely focus on carrying out the fullness of their vocation. That said tho, where are the clerical private jets at?

Regardless if a claim is true or not or if a scandal is a real scandal or not, if you learned it from people on the internet this is not reason to join or to abstain from the Orthodox Church. To truly seek the answer of if the Orthodox Church is the True Church you must attend the Liturgies and talk with the priest. Don't take my word for it, go to Liturgy

I generally like this account, and used to be curious about the EO. But there is no valid reason to ever charge for baptism. The unwillingness to call out the sinful practices within your own group lead towards the certainty of decay.

There can be bad actors and bad local teachings and practice but ultimately the traditions of man fall away or are expelled from the Church. God promised that he would lead us into all truth and preserve the faith. I have no anxiety about the Church Victorious. Our Holy Ones will uphold the faith.

@ExtraSaltedNuts I don't like it. I don't think it should happen. It does happen but it isn't Simoney so it's up to the Bishop to make the final call on it. If it's not Simoney then it's up for debate of general good practice. If it isn't Simoney then it isn't a black and white issue.

You can certainly make an argument that they shouldn't charge at all and this is why the suggested fee is not at all universal and seems to be found only in one jurisdiction of our faith but it still doesn't fully equate to Simoney. When push comes to shove these parishes cannot deny the sacriment of baptism if tge fee isn't paid otherwise they will have a bishop to answer to.

I don't like this Ortho dating discourse. I am believer in true love, finding your other half. It doesnt happen by ticking off some boxes. It all feels so robotic and unnatural. You just meet the person and you just know they are the one. Maybe they aren't what you expected, but youre not some manna that fell down from heaven either. You just trust your gut.
