Problem with all this is that it doesn't tell us what caused the stagnation in productivity growth. Just that this slowdown is a big factor in our woes. What changed sometime around 2001?
Richard Jones@RichardALJones

A good FT piece from Martin Wolf arguing, rightly imv, that at root of UK's political woes is a 20 yr long slowdown in productivity growth "a good economy — one with widely shared economic growth — is a necessary condition for political stability in a liberal democracy"...

You should see what our David has done with his latest buy to let. A tired old 1930s detached. He's modernised the lot. New plastic windows, properly insulated. The original front garden was a maintenance nightmare so he's tarmacked it over. Parking for four cars now. He's painted the brickwork a smart grey. Tenants love it. The neighbours aren't happy but they should see it on a sunny day. A sight for sore eyes. Some people just have vision. 🇬🇧

Two: when milk prices did increase, between 2020 and 2022, it was not because of soaring profits. The biggest contributors: farming costs, overheads, and, most significantly, labour! The idea that prices rise because of profiteering is for the birds 3/3

Amid all the talk of freezing the price of groceries, I looked at what goes into the cost of a pint of milk. Two things jump out... 1/3

@SamaHoole @vjl2 He doesn’t have to have £140k It’s payable over 10 years. A luxury not granted to other businesses or private investors. He wouldn’t need to sell 60 acres. Hypothetical situations like this aren’t helpful I’m afraid

A farmer dies in April 2026. His son inherits the farm. The farm has been in the family since 1847. The farm consists of: 300 acres of grazing pasture, a farmhouse built in 1892, a barn, a milking parlour, two tractors of varying ages, a Land Rover that runs about 70% of the time, and a herd of 180 Hereford-cross cattle. On paper, the farm is worth approximately £3.2 million. This is because land near him has been bought recently by a London hedge fund looking for carbon credits, which has dragged the comparable value of every field within forty miles upward to a number nobody local can justify. In cash, the farm produces a profit of about £28,000 a year in a good year. In a bad year it loses money. The son also works as a fencing contractor three days a week to keep the operation viable. The inheritance tax bill on a £3.2 million estate, even at the reduced 20% rate, comes to approximately £140,000 after the increased threshold is applied. The son does not have £140,000. The son has never had £140,000. The son has £4,200 in his current account and an overdraft. The son sells 60 acres to a developer to pay the tax. The developer puts solar panels on the 60 acres. The remaining herd cannot be sustained on the reduced land. The herd is sold. The barn becomes a holiday let. A different family eats Brazilian beef this Christmas without knowing why the price went up. The Treasury collects £140,000. The land never produces British food again.

@bswud the interesting thing about crossrail is it fast east west route, but if you look at interchanges it has very poor connections to north south tubes other than thames link. connection at oxford circus would have over wellmed the the station and tube lines

The incredible power of crossrailing means that we should be willing to build cheaper MVP crossrails that get built, rather than trying for theoretical optimality but spending decades piling up the money. British cities have the most Crossrail-friendly rail networks in the world. Manchester could have transport on par with Munich for the price of a 1.5km tunnel, one wholly new station, two upgrades, and some electrification and signalling fixes. At the per-mile cost of the Elizabeth Line, that would cost only around £2 billion. Birmingham, Glasgow, and arguably Leeds face similar (though not quite so perfect) setups. London has at least eight cases, and some could be 10x shorter than the Elizabeth Line, without any of the overbuilding proposed with Crossrail 2.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan@MayorofLondon

The Elizabeth line has transformed how Londoners move across the city. 🚇 Tottenham Court Road station is now the busiest Tube station, with 63.4m journeys in 2025 (Northern, Central & Elizabeth line connections).

This is not the first time I’ve heard this view.
Dave@That_Mr_Raw

@KirstieMAllsopp @wesstreeting @BBCr4today They are. Lots of developments being built nationwide by the big house builders, under PRS ( private rental) schemes. Big companies acting as landlords charging extortionate rents. The smaller and one man band landlords are deliberately being forced into selling their properties.

When VAT was cut on tampons and ebooks, prices didn’t fall - the suppliers kept the benefit. Unclear why this will be different.
