Lots of policing kids behaviors coming across the timeline, so I offer this: as we rethink schools, consider transforming the traditional roles of power and positionality. Students are not coming to schools, but rather we are guests in their homes. How should we act accordingly?

@pgorski By “ppl like me” I mean ppl who love to engage but tend to overthink everything to the point where it is hard to engage (see, I just did it—overthinking my terminology).

@pgorski I’m so struggling with this balance. I feel Twitter is a poweful tool to connect, learn, and advocate. . . but oh the anxiety it brings me. I also think the space is dominated by the ppl with the most followers, and doesn’t make room for people like me. That’s my anxiety maybe.🤷🏻‍♀️

Social justice friends: Does Twitter give you joy? Anxiety? Something else? I feel healthier when I have distance from it. I feel unhealthy mindlessly scrolling, like my soul's folding in on itself. How have you found balance? Have you considered permanent disconnection?

My daily emotional reactions to national news: 😢🤬🤢🤮😲😭😩🤢🤢🤮😳😢🥴🤮🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😢🤤😴😳 Yet, I’m still expecting better news tomorrow. Like that somehow powerful people will wake up and decide, nah not like this—it’s not working. It has to get better. Right?

Instead of getting mad at your child’s teacher for wanting to stay alive, get mad at the government for refusing to provide monthly stimulus checks, more unemployment money, rent freezes, and childcare subsidies. The government has failed to act, not teachers.

Fight for your libraries and librarians or they (we) will be gone. Do not talk to me about non-proficiency in reading if kids have not learned to love to read and do not expect ELA teachers to do yet another job on top of the many others they are expected to do.

Whether it be in my personal or professional life, I know that every hater/challenger has contributed to my own growth and insight. For this, I thank each one of them. But, sometimes I don’t want to learn all these life lessons. Sometimes I just want people to be less shitty.

@juliac17792634 @alicekeeler I understand your framing! I prefer to “assess” reading comp skills by providing opportunities for Ss to read and discuss, monitoring process and identifying challenges alongside in a more authentic way. I’d argue that the system makes us think we need other measures. We don’t.

@EdDOnayemi @alicekeeler These are all excellent metacognitive Qs--and I especially like the identity one & will probably use it--but they cannot measure reading comprehension itself. Kids can Google story or novel plots & themes and then relate them to themselves. I must measure reading comp skills too.

Walk into my son's room.. taking his summer school online final. He hides his phone. No kidding he is googling the test answers. As we move remote we can't assess the same ways. They WILL Google it!!!

@EdDOnayemi @alicekeeler Could you give an example of a question that you CAN’T use Google to cheat on? A student who wants to take a short-cut can find content to answer almost anything.

@juliac17792634 @alicekeeler Was your identity visible in the content? What do you want to know more about? What perspectives have been left out of the discussion? What past learning experiences framed your learning on the topic? What barriers did you face in navigating the learning?

@juliac17792634 @alicekeeler Are the resources you learned from valid? What questions would you ask an expert on this topic? Was this topic meaningful to you? What conversations with your peers stretched you the most? What can you do when teachers ask all the questions?
