60 years ago today, on March 21, 1965, the third march from #Selma, Alabama to #Montgomery, the state’s capital, began. An estimated 8,000 people marched from Brown Chapel. However, only 300 were allowed to march on the two-lane highway to Montgomery. The march took 5 days. By the time the nonviolent foot soldiers reached Montgomery and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his culminating speech on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol on March 25, their number had grown to 25,000+. 5 months later, the U.S. Congress passed the #VotingRightsAct of 1965, purposed to eradicate the barriers preventing Black people from exercising their right to #vote. #RestoreTheVRA #JohnLewisVRAA #MLK #CorettaScottKing #JohnLewis #Nonviolence365
