Some thoughts as the two-week mark of the war nears: (1) Those who pushed for this war, in Jerusalem and Washington, are realizing that they’ve gotten themselves into a major mess; (2) None of the three demands made of Iran—on the nuclear front, ballistic missiles, or regional alliances—is any closer to being implemented; (3) By killing Khamenei, the U.S. and Israelis facilitated a transfer of power that might have been far more contentious had it occurred in peacetime, even if we need to confirm that Mujtaba is in a condition to lead; (4) Hezbollah remains a potent force, but its potency will provoke a major Israeli escalation whose outcome remains unknown, but will almost certainly include the occupation of more Lebanese land for an indefinite period of time; (5) This occupation may help revive the “resistance” component of Hezbollah’s identify, much to the dissatisfaction of many Lebanese who are fed up with seeing their country again turned into a proxy battleground; (6) If the U.S. looks for an off-ramp from this disastrous venture with Iran, there will be repercussions for the U.S-Israeli relationship, since it is Netanyahu who pushed an utterly clueless U.S. leadership into this war; (7) Any U.S. setback will once again show the Gulf states in particular that alignment with the U.S. is no longer a guarantee of success, and that it is far better to balance relations with China and Russia on one side with the U.S. and Israel on the other, which will have major regional consequences.
