I graduated in 2020 when we were paying 12M shs per year (5M per semester with a 10-week recess semester in between). After graduation a clinic wants to pay you 1.2M per month for a 4-day shift. What a joke!

One morning, a middle aged woman entered the hospital straight to the pharmacy with a medical note in her hands. She had one complaint. Apparently she was at a clinic where she had gone to receive medical attention, but the nurse had failed to locate her veins to infuse her with the intravenous medicine. As a dispenser, I had to look clearly and verify the prescription before I take any other step. She wanted that she gets the prescribed medicine from the facility I was. On her note, she had been diagnosed with Malaria using a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT, commonly known as strip) which was positive. The prescription contained Artesunate injection 180mg 3 doses, ceftriaxone 2g stat dose and oral anti malarials. on inquiring about her weight, she was above 100kg, she looked sick but not to the extent of admission. No blood smear test was made, nor CBC. I had to calculate the dose of artesunate injection afresh and it went beyond 240 mg. In the end, she agreed to go only with the oral anti malarials medication and a simple pain killer (paracetamol) I've been of late asking myself what takes place in some of these clinics. Besides prescribing alot of medicine that don't even have any use in the body at that moment, at least let the doses be correct. These are the people that are increasing anti microbial resistance in the population, and remember some medicines have cross resistance. I was told that a cannula should always be in someone who's admitted but sometimes you find that someone with a small condition like an upper respiratory tract infection is out on IVs. People nowadays fancy walking around with cannulas. Much as we're thinking about making money, let's also think about the lives of our clients.
