I was a student at Pearl HS, in Nashville, when he died. The rumor that he was murdered by white people rapidly gained traction. PHS was, then, 99% black... 26 total non-black students... and the Principal had us all gather in a disused autoshop (PHS was BIG on trades electives in the 1970's) and snuck us away from the school. We were kept away for 3 full days.
