What if the experts don't agree? And Science is not DECIDED by evidence. Are you a lawyer or something? Science is DECIDED by proof. Empirical studies, modeling, and experimentation are essential and valuable but often not decisive. Scientific and mathematical proof is awesome when we achieve it, and until we do, questions and challenges should be encouraged.

A plumber knows more about plumbing than you. A pilot knows more about flying than you. A scientist usually knows more about science than you. That doesn’t make them automatically right. But it does mean the burden of proof is on the person claiming thousands of experts got it wrong. Science isn’t a democracy. It’s not decided by likes, vibes, or confidence. It’s decided by evidence. And evidence doesn’t care who wins the argument.

I'd have a lot of questions about their situation before advising, but the first step would be to max employer matching, 2nd 1 month of actual expenses (not income), then increase both as they are able with a goal of maxing retirement contributions and 3-6 months of expenses with very little priority on savings after 3 months.

Hot take: Telling a 22 year old to "build a 6 month emergency fund before investing" is the most well-intentioned bad advice in personal finance. Time in the market at 22 is irreplaceable. Cash sitting still is a guaranteed loss. Agree or disagree?

@simonmaechling Because no scientist in history has faced skeptics. You have lost your way. Trust is not part of the scientific method or science, proof is. Additionally, this post is recurring almost verbatim from multiple accounts. Just quit with the "trust the science" social engineering.

The intelligence level of the US populace has increased at a steady 3 IQ points every ten years, What cracks me up about these irrational attacks on boomers is that gen z and millennials are actually the first generations in US history that are NOT smarter than previous generations.

I actually agree with a lot of what you are saying. In my defense, I didn't make it a fiscal discussion, I was replying to a fiscal discussion. I wish I hadn't brought my daughter into it because I didn't discuss it with her first but she independently made her decisions, I just supported them. She would excel at plumbing and I have a lot of plumbing projects in mind so it would be GREAT to have a plumber in the family. I made no recommendations to anyone, I just believe trades are viable, honorable, and under-valued. I also value college education but I believe that it is over emphasized as the only road to success,

Bro, come on Working a job for a couple years before you actually land where you end up is not the same and you know it. I'm White collar working a blue collar job. It's not the same. I'm not going to stolen valor this shit from guys who've been busting knuckles since age 16. I'm no stranger to hard work, but I'm absolutely an armchair intellectual. Writing and reading and talking give me great pleasure, and it is only because I am a dimwit that I've never been able to capitalize on this proclivity. Working in the trades is fulfilling on a level I can't articulate. But being fulfilled is the antithesis of being creative in my opinion. I can't write anymore, I don't have anything to say at the end of the day. I want to keep writing, I have so many things in development that are just stalled out, because when I get home, it takes every bit of whatever I have left just to not be a shitty father. And I'm a shitty husband because of triage. If I can't fix that, it's going to bite me and I know it. But I'm so fucking tired. Yes, you can make lots of money if you have the skill set and can start your own business. But you won't raise your kids, you won't be the best husband you can be, not if you want to be top Dog in your selected trade. The blue collar clade keeps this country going, just like the soldiery keeps this country together. But they all have divorces, shared custody, and a litany of mental and physical problems. I guess my point here is, stop trying to act like this is some kind of fiscal decision. Stop trying to pretend that this is a video game where you can pick a new skin and play at it and get points. Everybody is bending you over the table, completely appropriately in my opinion, for the fact that you will recommend to young men you don't know they should do something you would never in a million years recommend your daughter do. As a guy who has been utterly dominated by my inability to let go of ego, you should probably humble yourself and realize what time it is.

You can always tell when a man has never turned a wrench in quiet desperation to feed his family. "The Trades" are a human menagerie to be referenced and occasionally paid when an appliance gets uppity for types such as these.
LetUsTry@EdwardStein41

@rhodes_mzra @jmhorp It is extremely prudent. However, your second statement is overly broad. For most non-STEM degrees, The trades do as well or better without debt accumulation. The trades are also a better start than unfocused or mistaken academic pursuits.

I apologize. I over reacted because I took it as a personal attack and should have taken it more philosophically as a hypothetical and said this: Both trades and college graduate jobs are laudable. The advantages of the trades are time and debt. Advantages of college can be upper earnings level, intellectual challenge, and physical wear and tear. I never advised anyone on anything in this thread and would have no issue with whatever choice my daughter made.

All myths in this discussion should be dispelled. Both trades and college graduate jobs are laudable. I like that you reference specific degrees because all are not equal. The advantages of the trades are time and debt. Advantages of college can be upper earnings level, intellectual challenge, and physical wear and tear.

If I say "Social Security is a ponzi", then people say "yeah, that's bad" or "I paid in". If I say "Social Security feeds the young to the old" then people get angry. And rightfully so. Then they either have to argue this is untrue (good luck). Or stop supporting it.

Other inmates will encourage Karmelo to commit more crimes in prison . He could end up there for life if he goes down the path. Oh prison is a different environment. They’ll see him as a little thug assassin. If they want violence he will be the guy they talk into it. He’s weak compared to the guys he’s about to be pals with. They’ll use him to keep their hands clean.

@jmhorp Yes, your numbers are consistent with most sources. $60K is actually upper initial entry. Another interesting reason for the median being low is the number of apprentice level leaving the field. Many of them leverage their training, experience and benefits to get a STEM degree.

@jmhorp Acknowledged. I was not expecting the median to be so close to entry level, but you are correct. However, the BLS median excludes self-employed, owners, and partners. It is also in line with non-STEM college graduates with much less debt.
