@JustParkerHere All of this. Rent is crazy — commercial spaces sit vacant for years and landlords still think we’re in the glory days of huge hikes. DC subsidizes all the new developments for 5 years then rent doubles. Until we get small business rent support, closures will keep rolling in.

TL:DR Insurance goes up ~10% each year so is up 90%. Payroll cost up 260% in 9 years. 87% came in the last two years. Another 70% increase by 2027. Rent is up 30%. Prices have only increased 25%. Something has to give. As of right now it looks like it’s legacy bars that will.

If you’re wondering why bars are closing or are close to it in DC here’s some reasons why. That DRAM shop law has had zero effect. It does not mandate that insurance companies have to lower our premiums. It just lowers a bar’s liability.
