Elias Chipimo

Where's Elias Chipimo and what is he is up to these days? I was at Mulungushi to hear him launch NAREP some 15 years ago. He unveiled a vision so bold that it sounded reckless: to transform Zambia into an energy superpower, a beacon of innovation and a regional infrastructural hub. Later read his book - part memoir, part manifesto. Found it yesterday as I reorganised my library.

Part of grooving responsibly is actually having the money to groove. As content creator @tumi213 puts it: “CONTRIBUTE.” I got to go to @Patumba_’s AGM last week to discuss just this with Hobbiton Board Chairman @EliasChipimo. @Chileshe3M came in a suit of course. A thread:

Impressive vision, @EliasChipimo 🎓 A STEM-focused A Level academy with leadership training is exactly what Zambia needs to nurture ethical, future-ready leaders. How will Crucible ensure its model remains accessible to talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds as it scales across Africa?

Crucible has opened its first A Level senior secondary leadership academy in Lusaka, taking 28 students from over 400 applicants. The STEM-focused school blends Cambridge International study with leadership training to raise education quality and grow ethical leaders in Zambia. Founder’s scholarships are being offered to all in the first cohort, and applications are now open for brilliant minds, as Crucible targets 100 academies across Africa by 2045.

What matters is not education or money, but your persistence and the intensity of your desire to learn; that failures, mistakes, and conflicts are often the best education of all; and how true creativity and mastery emerge from all this.

Thank you for all your comments, even the snarky ones😊. Yes, I feel the pain we are all going through. Our country needs healing. We need leaders who will: lead with humility; prioritise local ownership; welcome opposing voices; and seek to unify, not divide. That day is coming.

We spoke so passionately about this beautiful country and Linda puts down a great book. She also used the book launch as a platform to discuss the current constitution amendment which she and Elias argued was a regression in our democracy.

Mwisho, your new taxpayer bill? A Zambian member of parliament earns an estimated K5.7 million on a 5 year stretch in the national assembly. That cost is about to expand in astronomical proportion. Under the proposed changes, the national assembly will squeeze in a total of 256 MP's in 2026. Here is a pedestrian arithmetic on how expensive Zambian democracy will become on emoluments and gratuities. In 2022, UPND, PF and Independent MP's unanimously hiked their fees by 17%. Per annum: Ordinary MP. 1. Salary: K236,497. 2. Special allowance: K47,515. 3. Constituency allowance: Rural: K49,608. Urban: K39,688. 4. Per sitting: K3,000. 5. Mid-term gratuities: K2.5 million x 2. Do the math for 256 members of parliament over a period of 5 years.

This weekend’s highlight was a kinsmen’s meeting with Mr. ⁦@EliasChipimo⁩, founder of NAREP. So much to reflect on. Including that if it’s hard to afford 20 million Zambians a decent life, it will be worse when we’re 40 million, and that’s very soon. 🤨
