The Motability story is a Chagos-style "£18bn" story. Numbers are just too big to process. Hard to believe. Hard to internalise the scale of it, if it does turn out to be true.

@campbellclaret @HilaryBurrage The line to Sheffield is closed this weekend so that it can be upgraded and electrified - which will be good in the long term. The problem now is that the UK rail network is so fragmented and silo'ed that it's really difficult to divert trains around other lines.

Train travel 2024. Trying to get to Sheffield. No direct trains for some reason. Train to Crewe, change at Tamworth. Every carriage like a pre-Covid rush hour tube. Whether NHS, education, transport, crime, prisons it’s hard to overstate the absolute mess the Tories left and the scale of the challenge to fix it all.
