@JohnRentoul @thomasforth Yes, I understand that the relative share of new cars 'purchased' via motability has increased. But don't follow why that makes motability "bad", and the article doesn't address that.

The Motability story is a Chagos-style "£18bn" story. Numbers are just too big to process. Hard to believe. Hard to internalise the scale of it, if it does turn out to be true.

@kitkilgour @RossMcCaff @HCH_Hill @BIforPeace @seatsixtyone Couchette beds are much more comfortable than sleeper seats. Caledonian Sleeper had planned to bring in airline business class style lay flat seats but I understand that this brought up some crash safety concerns so was dropped.

@RossMcCaff @HCH_Hill @BIforPeace @seatsixtyone But plenty of the sleepers in France offer couchettes with up to six berths out of Gare de Austerlitz - euro 80 to Toulouse a couple of years ago. I agree not for everyone, but why ban outright?

@charly__says @the_transit_guy I've stayed in a similar style canal facing house with friends in Utrecht a few times before and it was perfectly nice.

American politicians at all levels would have you believe that no one in the country wants to live in a neighborhood like this: x.com/FilmendeFietse…

@campbellclaret @HilaryBurrage The line to Sheffield is closed this weekend so that it can be upgraded and electrified - which will be good in the long term. The problem now is that the UK rail network is so fragmented and silo'ed that it's really difficult to divert trains around other lines.

Train travel 2024. Trying to get to Sheffield. No direct trains for some reason. Train to Crewe, change at Tamworth. Every carriage like a pre-Covid rush hour tube. Whether NHS, education, transport, crime, prisons it’s hard to overstate the absolute mess the Tories left and the scale of the challenge to fix it all.

I prosecuted sex predators. Trump is one. I shut down for-profit scam colleges. He ran one. I held big banks accountable. He's owned by them. I'm not just prepared to take on Trump, I'm prepared to beat him.

@jimmybrechin @SamTBaron @mikegalsworthy Bruh, you’re obviously not up to date with the absolute state of the UK military. Nothing is being restocked or replaced. 14 years of Tory nonsense has seen to that

@NickDTRT @JohnLewisEU I'm as critical of FPTP as anyone else, but to say 3rd biggest is misleading, in terms of both elected representatives and party members the Liberal Democrats hold that position. You would be much more justified in saying that Reform is the 3rd most popular party in the UK.

@JohnLewisEU I’d have thought not, you’ll find they stayed up last night to watch reform become the 3rd biggest party in the UK.

One of the fun - but also depressing - aspects of doing @tomorrowsMPs is assembling a list of Accidents Waiting To Happen among the new MPs. Any experienced journalist has instinctive feel for wrong-uns. It always amazes me how the parties can't spot them miles away too.

The Public Accounts Committee report on Rwanda won't get much airtime, but it's a devastating read. "little to show for the money spent…continually failed to be transparent with Parliament…fell woefully short of reality...does not have a credible plan". committees.parliament.uk/publications/4…

@AnushkaAsthana But can she stand again as a MP if she chooses? I the Tory Party comms are a chaotic, but the comms around this are a mess. They need to make a statement clarifying the situation and do it soon.
