This was a hard shell to crack: happy to share our preprint on the structure of microbial gas vesicles, giant gas-filled protein shells used by aquatic bacteria and archaea to regulate their buoyancy. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Today's Micrograph: During fixation with glutaraldehyde, acidification can occur which could cause structural alterations. Therefore, the pH of a culture should match the pH of fixation. Here we see S. epidermidis.
Fun #SEM times with @AnkitaChauhan00 in the @GeomicroTueb lab.

@JeremiahShuster @GeomicroTueb I propose a Netflix documentary @JeremiahShuster ! Kinda like the fascinating fungi one but a "reveal" of the microbial life of rocks

Today's Micrograph: The amount of cells can be quite low in comparison to minerals, especially from environmental samples. There is always a sense of triumph when small "biofilms" are found hidden within microenvironments around minerals.
Fun #SEM times in @GeomicroTueb lab!

“Please, as you write papers now, consider including a wide range of names that your organism has been called. That might help us at least keep track of the mess.”
Karen Lloyd@archaearama
We have a nomenclature problem in microbiology because around the early 2000’s we realized that many deep branches had not been cultured and when they are cultured, they probably will never meet the standards required by the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes 1/n
