This is the same local judge who issued two injunctions trying to keep the referendum on redistricting from ever taking place. Both of those orders were overturned. Republicans went back to him because they knew he'd give them what they wanted. This ruling will be appealed.

BREAKING: A Republican-appointed Virginia judge has struck down the Democratic-backed redistricting amendment in full, ruling it unconstitutional and “void from the start.” All votes from the April 21 special election are now invalid, and the state is permanently blocked from using or implementing the new maps. AG Jay Jones says he will immediately file an appeal.

Don’t even spend an ounce of thought thinking about the lower court decision on the Virginia redistricting. It’s a rogue county that’s always overruled. AG Jay Jones has this under control. Carry on and keep celebrating!!!

🚨🚨BREAKING🚨🚨 As if last nights loss in Virginia was not enough for Republicans.. There is now deep panic within the Republican Party after it was discovered that they may have massively over-diluted their new congressional maps. The maps were drawn with the assumption that the GOP would hold the Hispanic vote, which Trump won handily in 2024 (55% of Hispanics in Texas voted for him). However, due to Trump’s unpopular policies, we have seen a massive shift in his approval rating among Hispanics. It is currently down 35 points since he was elected. But it’s not just his approval rating. We have also already seen the shift in practice during the Texas Senate primaries a few months ago. The ten most Hispanic counties in Texas shifted heavily toward Democrats. 77% of all votes in these counties went to a Democrat (Talarico or Crockett). Here is the breakdown by county, and how it compares to Trump’s performance in 2024: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 – 𝟗𝟖% 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 🔵 Votes for Democrats: 6,700 🔴 Votes for Republicans: 300 96% voted Democrat in 2026. 58% voted for Trump in 2024. Last time gerrymandering was brought to a vote, every single Democrat voted to ban it, and every single Republican voted to keep it. Republicans blocked it in the Senate using the filibuster. Stop making shit up.
Erick Erickson@EWErickson

Democrats don't really want a national ban on gerrymandering in large part because both Democrat and Republican data experts agree it would hurt the Democrats. It's a talking point. In California, their nonpartisan gerrymandering board was packed with Democrats, some of whom just claimed to be Republicans to get on the board.

Dems could have folded after TX but they did not. It was CA Prop 50. Reclaiming a seat in UT. Pushing back in OH, IN, NH, NE, & KS. Now a big win in VA. These results don’t happen by accident. Huge credit on strategy & resources to execute the strategy goes to @hakeemjeffries
Jeff Zeleny@jeffzeleny

Will the Virginia redistricting vote make him Speaker? We'll know in November. But @RepJeffries was at the center of the strategy and winning effort. "Democrats did not step back," he said. "We fought back. When they go low, we hit back hard."

A reminder while Republicans bitch about Democrats finishing the redistricting fight that they started: they’ve got full control of government— they can pass a law banning partisan gerrymandering any time they want to. They won’t. Republicans aren’t mad that gerrymandering exists; they’re mad that they’re not the only ones using it.

Gerrymandering is undemocratic and evil. And it's essential the party that has repeatedly tried to ban it keeps doing it until the party that historically abused it gets curb stomped so badly they cry uncle and agree to the ban. These are not contradictory positions to hold.

Unlike Texas, Virginia and California did this with the consent of the people. Republicans wanted this fight. They got it.

As we head towards midterm elections, NYT says it has identified “hundreds” of fake AI-generated pro-Trump social media accounts. Trump has reposted content from at least one of the fake accounts.
