In Sub-Saharan Africa, more than 29% of school-age children are out of school and 9 out of 10 children cannot read and understand a simple text by age 10.
Now more than ever, we must make #education a non-negotiable priority. #EducationDay

On #EducationDay, we must not forget the millions of Afghan girls who have been denied access to their classrooms for over two years.
We will not rest until girls in #Afghanistan regain the opportunity to learn and thrive.

.#Gender-based disparities in #education are a significant barrier to achieving social and economic progress. Educated women contribute to economic growth, reduce poverty rates, and improve health outcomes for themselves and their families.

ANNOUNCEMENT 📢
N.B The African Union Themetic of Year 2024 will primarily focus on 📚𝐄𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 🎓 and undoubtedly have a strong emphasis on the role of youth in advancing education initiatives.
1. Africa has witnessed commendable strides in terms of access, completion, and quality of basic education with young girls' education having been prioritized. See @acerwc
2. Nevertheless, persistent gaps hinder the realization of objectives outlined in the 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 (CESA 16-25). Furthermore, the quality of education is a big crisis, there remains a skills mismatch & need for de-colonised courses/ curriculum. @APRMorg
Namibia Targeted Review on Youth Unemployment highlights some of the existing gaps and how they contribute to Youth Unemployment.
3. The AU educational focus of the year is anticipated to drive more robust action to address the Out of School Rate, particularly targeting those not enrolled in pre-primary, primary, secondary, or higher education levels.
4. The AU has outlined comprehensive strategies to elevate the quality of education and learning across the continent. In addition to the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA), key initiatives include 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 (STISA-2024), and the 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 (TVET).
5. My wish is that the thematic focus of the year acknowledges and actively involves the youth as vital stakeholders, recognizing their pivotal role in driving educational advancements and fostering sustainable development in Africa. Through the engagement and empowerment of the youth, the African Union will create a more inclusive, dynamic, and forward-looking educational landscape for the continent towards #Agenda2063 & attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 #SDGs

It is with utmost delight and admiration that I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Helga Fogstad @HFogstad, on her recent appointment as the Director of Health Program at @UNICEF.
I had the pleasure of working closely with Helga throughout her tenure as the Executive Director of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health #PMNCH, as a Member of the #MNCH Expert Workstream at PMNCH and as an advocacy partner, in which under her visionary leadership supported by knowledge synthesis, partner engagement, campaigns and outreach, we held stakeholders accountable for their commitments to the wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents, thereby shaping policy and financing agendas globally and propelling crucial issues like adolescent and sexual and reproductive health and rights to the forefront.
The @WellbeingAfrica Foundation is a committed NGO PMNCH Constituency Member, actively initiating and participating in collaborative activities nationally and globally to achieve the objectives of the PMNCH 2021-2025 Strategy, in line with the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, Agenda for Action for Adolescents, 1.8 Billion Young People for Change Campaign, as well as the @UN Sustainable Development Goals.
#WBFA’s grassroots and community-led adolescent and youth programming such as the Adolescent Skills & Drills #PSHE #WASH program, builds youth capacity and meaningful engagement, aiding to understand and address issues that threaten their ability to lead a healthy life in Nigeria. A thriving adolescent population fuels socio-economic growth by contributing to increased productivity and lower health expenditure, while reducing intergenerational inequities, and their experiences, voices and needs are vital in shaping interventions to improve wellbeing services.
As Helga embarks on this new chapter in her journey, myself and The Wellbeing Foundation Africa have no doubt that her breadth of experience, passion, and dedication will continue to be a driving force in shaping global health advocacy, especially for the over 1.8 billion adolescents and youth who live in our world today.

Some of our rights are worse off today than in 1948, says @UN_WGDAWG chair @DorothyEstrada.
"We see some of the most extreme forms of gender-based discrimination that did not exist in this systematised, country-wide manner as they do today in 2023".
