Meet Dr. Morris Odoch, the man whose fingerprints are all over Uganda's biggest modern infrastructure projects. From the stunning Source of the Nile Bridge in Jinja to the Kampala Flyover, his work is legendary. But what makes his story truly incredible is that this top-tier civil and structural engineer never once sat in a secondary school classroom.
Growing up in West Nile, Odoch was a top performer in his Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). However, instead of taking the traditional high school route, he noticed many university graduates struggling to find jobs. Making a bold decision, he enrolled straight into a village technical school in Arua, opting for hands-on vocational skills over a standard classroom.
Starting from the very bottom as an unskilled laborer, he mastered his craft one step at a time. He worked his way up to mason, site foreman, and eventually a project/contract manager. Through sheer merit and relentless drive, he pushed through Kyambogo University to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Building Engineering.
His brilliance soon took him far beyond Uganda's borders. Odoch traveled to Japan to earn a Master’s in Infrastructure Planning, followed by an MBA in the UK, another Master’s in International Construction Law, and eventually a self-funded PhD in International Construction Management. The boy from a village technical school had evolved into a globally recognized bridge expert.
Today in 2026, Dr. Odoch is living proof that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is not a backup plan, but a powerful fast track to success. Having managed massive projects during his tenure at the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), he now dedicates his time to mentoring the next generation of builders and advocating heavily for technical education across the country.
His journey proves that mastering practical skills can build nations. What are your thoughts on technical and vocational education compared to traditional university degrees in Uganda?

YOUNG ENGINEER LEARN DESIGNS:
At the age of 25 in 2005, as a fresh graduate of Civil Engineering from Makerere I was lucky to be posted to the Entebbe Water and Sanitation Project by M&E Associates of Eng. Nelson Droruga having Eng. Erhard Schulte of Beller Consult as my direct Supervisor.
He gave me an advice to learn as many engineering designs as possible. I took to structural designs and became so good in it that I started doing structural designs of the structures in the project and he even gave me the authority to author some of the letters to the contactor signed by him as the Resident Engineer. Today I found one of the letters I authored referenced EBB 159-05
These 2 activities shaped my experience in Engineering and Consultancy.
I will always advise young engineers to learn as many engineering designs as possible; Structural Design, Road and Bridges Designs, Electrical Designs, Mechanical and Plumbing Designs, Water Treatment Plant designs etc.
At JDI, we're opening May intake for 3-month Engineering Design courses — Structural, Electrical, and Mechanical. Apply at jdi.ac.ug or WhatsApp +256 772 851 284

It’s #Monday a fresh start to the week.
Be smart. Present yourself in the best possible way.
Shave cleanly. Trim your hair. Iron your shirts properly. Polish your shoes. Wear a good deodorant to stay fresh all day. Always wear a belt with your trousers.
Put in the effort to be the best version of yourself from the very beginning of the week.
Change into fresh boxers and vest never wear yesterday’s.
Be smart. Be a #gentleman.
Am walking in town today and I don’t want to meet a disorganized man. Njakukonkona engolo if I encounter you shabby.
Carry your masculinity with pride.
We’re counting on you.

Leading With Respect
I was brought up to respect people, and it is a value I hold in the highest regard.
So I was immediately intrigued when I received a book centered on the very subject of respect, from my dear friend @Twejaka.
I found myself curious about how @marcysyms navigated respect, and what it truly meant to lead with it.
In “Leading With Respect”, she reflects on her journey as CEO of a family-owned business, learning the ropes, applying herself fully, and never taking anything for granted.
She shares insights into the successes and challenges she navigated, and the pivots the business had to make along the way. She also writes about leading as a woman, and how she used her position to support and propel other women into leadership.
But what stayed with me most was her articulation of respect.
She didn’t just speak about it, she lived it.
First as a personal value shaped by her upbringing, and then as a value intentionally embedded across the business in how they dealt with and related to customers, service providers, colleagues, and staff.
Respect was a value that held steady in both good times and difficult ones. Respect was true North Star.
I love the powerful reminder that in treating people with respect, no detail is too small.
That is how respect is made visible.
