In 1994, shortly after Doom's release, we had the LDS missionaries over for dinner. It came up that I did computer games for a living, and one of the elders began regaling us with tales about this terrible Satanic game. Yup, it was Doom. Some radio stations in Utah had picked up on Doom's sinister nature and made broadcasts belaboring the game's evil. I blushed hard, but my wife giggled and asked the missionaries for more details which he was happy to provide. Eventually she bust out laughing and admitted that I, a true blue church member, had helped make it. Now the poor missionary (he was only 19) was embarrassed. I just told him the radio stations had some facts wrong. For instance, none of the gameplay involves shooting humans (zombies yes) and you don't worship demons. The demons are the bad enemy. 2/5

having spent the bulk of my life never swearing, I found that for the overwhelming majority of contexts it was perfectly fine, but there are approximately five cases where there really isn't a good substitute word and you're just straightforwardly hampered in expression

@Romy_Holland I think society has moved too far away from thinkers writing down their thoughts, and put too much weight on science solving all the issues. Science rocks, and does so many things, but it cannot do all the things, at least for now

my mom was extremely authoritarian when i was a kid. i hated this, and from a very young age responded by becoming increasingly stubborn and disobedient. i still struggle with the impulse to refuse to do anything i’ve been told i have to do, and with distrusting basically all authority. several of my siblings seem to have had basically the opposite outcome—they are fixated on following the rules and being perfect. their failure mode is they totally shut down if perfection cannot be achieved, and they struggle with conflict and direct communication. it’s possible these traits aren’t a result of our upbringing at all, but assuming there was an impact, it seems obvious there was an interaction between our genetic makeups and environment that pushed us in opposite directions. i imagine this makes it exceedingly difficult to study parental influence, and may result in us undercounting the role of environment. i’m not sure what to do with this, except to try to attune to my specific kid’s personality and not push too much in any direction.
