I am gravely concerned that a 10-month-old unvaccinated child from Deir al-Balah, #Gaza, has been confirmed to have polio—the first case in Gaza in 25 years. @WHO and partners urgently worked to collect and transfer stool samples from the child for testing at a WHO-accredited laboratory in the region. Genomic sequencing confirmed the virus is linked to the variant poliovirus type 2 detected in environmental samples collected in June from Gaza's wastewater. The child, who developed paralysis in the lower left leg, is currently in a stable condition. Given the high risk of poliovirus spread in Gaza and the region, the Palestinian Ministry of Health, @WHO and @UNICEF are working to implement two rounds of polio vaccination in the coming weeks to halt transmission. who.int/news/item/16-0…

We don't know absolutely everything there is to know about mpox (or any new infectious disease for that matter), but @WHO works hard to share, responsibly, the most accurate facts & current understanding of mpox, and updates the information if & when new facts emerge. Thanks, WHO

We've updated our #mpox public Q&As in light of recent developments (new clades, emergency declared, etc.) We'll update the Q&As on an ongoing basis, to keep them useful and fresh. who.int/news-room/ques…

@kakape @alexandraphelan My now fear is that richer countries now (stimulated by the PHEIC declaration = alarm!) start hoarding vaccines (to protect their population in case of spread) in stead of shipping them to DRC.

The WHO Standing Recommendations on #mpox have been extended for another year. These apply for all countries to maintain vigilance, response capacity and international solidarity
epidemi@Epidemino

@kakape @alexandraphelan 4) The Standing Recommendations for mpox expire on August 20, but can be [revised and] prolonged or transferred to Temporary Recommendations for the current PHEIC. (end)

@PeopleDocGeneva That's a good thing, Rosamund. The PHEIC declaration may give more attenttion to them.

@kakape @alexandraphelan I think interest in mpox had subsided in parallell with case numbers in "the West" anyway. Standing recommendations were a fair attempt to direct attention to Africa + continued vigilance in the West. A new PHEIC now gets more attention, I hope, than a continued PHEIC would have.

The repeat of the global declaration also shows that the termination of the first PHEIC in 2023 was “premature,” @alexandraphelan contends, particularly given the fact that countries in the Global North had “failed to appropriately respond to the ongoing efforts needed.” My story on mpox here: science.org/content/articl…
