@BFW Denver. The Broncos are heavy favorites but the Avs or Nuggets are next. Rockies are a distant fourth due to being terrible.

I need examples of a US city with at least three pro sports teams where the NHL team is top two in fandom in the city. Boys here said Detroit, DC and Tampa. I think I’ll give them DC and Tampa, but contest Detroit. Some guys said Minnesota, I think Twins are bigger than Wild.

Mark Driscoll, you coward, you refuse interviews from me, block me, and now selectively edit me (I know you didn't do the edit, some poor, terrified intern did it) — point to anything I've ever written or spoken that endorses progressive politics of progressive theology. You won't. Because you can't. Now when you get the courage for it, let's have that 1:1 conversation — on the record. I'll live stream it. Let's go tough guy.

With the #STLCards likely to open reg season with a 5-man rotation, and mixing in a 6th as needed, the first 3 spots will go to Libby, May, McGreevy. In alphabetical order that leaves Fitts, Leahy and Pallante to fill the other 2 spots. Who are your two?

@gpackiam Best take I’ve seen on this discussion so far. We are so addicted to productivity that stopping for any reason is viewed with skepticism. But God has other ideas…we have to trust him when we rest.

OK, I’ll bite: Saying that pastors need a sabbatical because their work is uniquely challenging is like saying OT Israel needed sabbath because their life was uniquely difficult. You’re missing the point. Sabbaths and sabbaticals are not rewards. They are not an escape for the exhausted. They are signposts of creation and salvation. They are means of beyond ourselves to the God who created, sustains, and redeems all things. Churches give their pastors sabbaticals as a sign to the world of what it looks like to work from a place of rest, free from the slavery to production and performance. For what it’s worth, I don’t think pastors have it rougher than teachers or entrepreneurs or stay at home parents. And the mental health of CEOs and business owners is far worse than that of pastors. That is why some in the business world are practicing radical rest and recreation. In other words, they’re catching on to the wisdom of God even while some theobros eschew it.

@joshjaco98 It’s such a nice change from the last couple of years. I honestly don’t need them to be good (though that’s nice) if they’re developing talent. We have a legit direction and that alone is enjoyable.

I don’t know how good the Cardinals will be this year, but I have no doubt it’ll be fun to watch this young core grow. There’ll be hiccups and rough patches for sure, but there’s just a ton of guys who intrigue me, and seeing who separates themselves from the rest is the journey

@gplawhorn Rather, it’s the power imbalance created by the position of pastor that’s the issue. Handling people who think they should lead for one reason or another IS all over the NT. The incessant demand to submit to a pastor with no mutual submission in return is what’s unacceptable. 2/2

@gplawhorn I tend to agree with Plumbline about pastors today but not for the same reason. There are lots of things we do and believe that have no reference in Scripture. Paul could not have imagined voting, for instance. That’s not the issue. 1/

This is just my opinion, as a pastor with three decades plus of ministry, mostly in very small churches. You write, "I take my duty to provide pastoral care and guidance very seriously." I'm glad; you should. But where do you find the term "pastoral care" in the New Testament? Where does the New Testament say that elders are to provide "guidance"? To argue against the idea of a "senior pastor" (which is admittedly not found in the New Testament) while using the phrases "pastoral care" and "guidance" (neither of which is found in the New Testament) is to use uneven scales.
Plumbline Faith@PlumblineFaith

Why do we persist in making our churches dependent upon, and primarily revolve around, a “Senior Pastor” …

When no such position or role exists in the New Testament? Eph. 4:11 is the only verse where the Greek noun translated as “pastor” is used in the New Testament regarding the church.

That’s it. Just once and nowhere else. Yet we’ve taken that one passage out of context and built our current, prevailing “pastor centric” model of church and church leadership around it. Surprisingly, however, “pastor centric” churches and church leadership are nowhere found in the New Testament. Nope, not, nada … Just ain’t there. And let’s be honest:

Not only has a “pastor centric” focus prevented churches today from being relational participatory gatherings with ministry one to another for the mutual building up of each other as the New Testament commands …

But it has destroyed many vocational “pastors” through burn out and disillusionment from trying to fill a position never intended by God.

The scope and intent of the word “pastor” in Eph 4:11, therefore, must be determined by the Greek grammar in that passage and by the rest of Scripture.

As to grammar, the word is tied together by a common, shared article with the word for teacher. Thus, in the Greek, “pastors and teachers” are two combined, interrelated functions in the church – not two independent, unrelated functions.

In the rest of the New Testament, the verb form of “pastor” – in the context of the church – is always used to describe a function performed by elders (plural), who also are to function as teachers.

Thus, in Eph. 4:11, Paul is saying that God gave the church those who function “as pastors and teachers” – i.e., elders – to equip God’s people to minister.

As such, “pastor” in the New Testament is never used, in either noun or verb form, to refer to a separate, independent position or office in the church. It is simply a term applied to one of the several functions assigned to elders (always plural) who serve each local church.

Pastoring is an important function. But it is only one of several functions that elders perform, rather than a separate office, title, or position that is apart from – or over – a proper, fully functional eldership.

Plus, there is not a single person called a “Pastor” in the New Testament, except for Jesus as the true head of the church.

I would never minimize the pastoral function of elders. As an elder, I take my duty to provide pastoral care and guidance very seriously – along with the other duties Scripture assigns to me as I serve our local church.

But neither will I take that one use of that one noun in Ephesians 4 out of context to build a whole “pastor centric” model of the church around it …

Especially when that “pastor centric” model is contrary to the rest of the New Testament and its numerous imperatives for how we are to actually be the church and how elders are to properly function among us.

@BTFleming315 @JennMGreenberg Perhaps there are good people there but it only makes the abuse of power even more egregious. I grieve for those who genuinely love the Lord and believe following abusive leaders aligns with doing so.

@BTFleming315 @JennMGreenberg Why does the denomination tolerate so many terrible people, then? They use logic and theology to abuse and love power more than the Lord. I can point to a handful of friends and acquaintances who were trying to do the right thing and were devastated by the OPC.

At the last church where we really felt we belonged, the pastor committed suicide. I have never spoken about it publicly out of respect for his wife, who I greatly admire and feel extremely sorry for. I will not include names, so in the unlikely situation that you somehow know who I’m talking about please keep it to yourself. Several years prior, I had brought a child abuse cover up to his attention. It spanned several denominations and two decades. The main problem (at least from my perspective) was that church leaders were not reporting instances of child abuse or domestic violence to law enforcement, in violation of state law. Child abusers were also attending church alongside kids, unbeknownst to their parents. I had no idea at the time that he too had failed to report child abuse in the past, and after he seemed to minimize my concerns multiple times, I went over his head and approached men in the presbytery (our area church network). When they ignored me or treated me with hostility, I went public with my concerns. I wrote an open letter to the OPC (my denomination at the time), and named names. I shared my personal account of my dad’s abuse, and included the names of pastors who I believed would confirm the veracity of my account. I also listed the names of child abusers in our denomination who were never reported or excommunicated, some of whom were attending church alongside children, and I shared the stories of a few fellow victims (with their permission). Much to my surprise, the article went viral. I was almost immediately put under church discipline and accused of lying and dishonoring my father. After several pastors defended me, and documentation proved my every word true, the charges were dismissed, but I was no longer welcome at my church. My pastor retired. A few years later, we learned that he’d killed himself. I cannot imagine the absolute horror and agony his family endured. What I experienced does not hold a candle to their grief. But that experience shook me profoundly, and I’ve honestly never gotten over it. I still grieve for him, and I still pray for his wife. While I still firmly believe that we must always honor God, speak the truth, and stand boldly against evil, it’s hard to put into words how painful the cost sometimes is. I do not believe that what he did is my fault. For all I know, he had completely different issues going on in his personal life or his head that drove him to it. I just don’t know. But, just a few years prior, I was the spark that lit the fuse that blew up our church. And that sucks. And I dearly wish that things could have gone differently. None of it, really, should have happened at all.

@LeahLibresco I was there for all four of our children’s births. A little hesitant to cut to cord the first time, by the last I intervened when the doctor tried to do it. I was proud to witness their first breaths. You only get to witness those first moments a few times in life.

Wild that Scott Galloway said, "I don’t believe men should be in the delivery room – I thought that was so disgusting and unnatural." It really sells men short! What vision of masculinity doesn't have a husband as the one who uses his strength to uphold his wife as she labors?

Steve’s Music Store is closing 4 of their 5 shops in Canada, the Downtown Montreal store will remain open and will become their only location and will be a MEGA store! Another nail in the coffin for music… this is what happens when you buy from Amazon and not local, remember you always get a better deal in store (they actually can’t advertise the price they can give you unless you speak in person in store, but it’s always better than what’s officially marked) 😃
