@TheReal12_Gage @marcorandazza Because I've had multiple conversations about Jewish topics and it sometimes devolves into the other person calling me Jew as a pejorative. Thought I would head it off. Making coffee in the manner that the Jewish man is doing does not fit the Jewish legal definition of cooking.

For someone who’s apparently not Jewish you sure did feel the need to jump ahead without me even claiming you are.

I used to think all the rules and workarounds were silly. I still do, sort of. But understand that it isn't that God cares if you make coffee on Shabbat. Its that you think about God so much on Shabbat that you jump through all these seemingly silly hoops to be more mindful about him. So yeah, its all weird and silly. But when observant Jews spend an entire night and day adhering to them, it is about paying homage to God, not about silly rules. God doesn't care if they eat tasty bacon. God cares if they remember and honor him and their traditions. Italians, you wouldn't use sauce from a jar. Why not? Is there NO good sauce from a jar? Of course not. But it is about honoring your Nonna. And if there is nothing else, have you never used some jarred sauce, but you doctor it up, so it isn't "that bad?" Sorta like that.

@catholic_comedy Our Catholic mass is much the same idea. The priest has a specific way that he must conduct each mass, if he were to skip a step in his rubric thd mass becomes invalid.

@catholic_comedy While we believe the spirit of a law is more important than the letter, Jews believe the letter of the law IS the spirit. All these intricate steps they follow is to ensure the Sabbath remains focused on God. They've taken themselves out of the driver seat for one day.

This is silly. The spirit of the law is important, too. You can't fool God into thinking you didn't cook when you absolutely did cook. The point of the Sabbath was to give man a day of rest because rest is good, not to put needless obstacles between man and his food.
