Starting a technical reading group on biostasis. Anchored by the new Fahy et al. preprint on whole brain vitrification with human data. Looking for 4 people who: → Have a technical background (bio, engineering, physics, etc.) → Want to actually work on biostasis problems, not just learn about them → Can commit to ~60 min/week for 6-8 weeks 5 people total, weekly Zoom sessions, working through foundational + frontier biostasis papers. Details + apply in the reply 👇

It’s a no-brainer: politicians who back healthier and longer lives for their constituents deserve reciprocal support from voters. LongeviPAC is the organization making that connection happen.

Denis Noble: "I think it's been unfortunate that philosophy and science have diverged." Why reductionist analysis in biology is a philosophical mistake: @drmichaellevin to Denis Noble: What have you learned from eastern philosophy that has informed your interest in biology? Denis Noble: There is no philosophical basis for saying that the only way to look at living organisms is through reductionist analysis. It is also a philosophical point that you cannot have living organisms without levels of interactions. (paraphrased snippets) More in the clip. The Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI)
In March 2024, we hosted our inaugural D.C. Fly-In, bringing together industry leaders, academics, investors, and policymakers. Despite the challenges of navigating a potential government shutdown, we successfully showcased the importance of representing the longevity science industry on Capitol Hill. This achievement was made possible by our incredible A4LI sponsors and community, who recognized the critical role of this field. We were honored to introduce our Longevity Science Caucus on Capitol Hill for the first time, with Co-Chairs Congressmen Paul Tonko and Gus Bilirakis delivering impactful opening remarks at the Longevity Science Briefing. Join us in shaping the future of healthier, longer lives at our 2025 D.C. Summit, happening April 28th–30th. With a newly appointed Health Cabinet supportive of longevity science and a renewed national push to make the United States a global leader in scientific innovation, 2025 offers a unique window of opportunity. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this transformative moment—learn more at a4li.org/dc-summit-2025/!

Do these experiments cost more now than they did in the past? How many would be cheap to do? There are newish funding mechanisms like EV grants and DAOs that look like they’re directing money to weirder stuff. Maybe more of that now than 10 years ago? Do you know if there are any good write ups on speculative funding mechanisms that haven’t been tried yet?

@EricMagro2 For the same reasons why it took so long to get aging recognized as a disease. Social conformity, optics of weird ideas, lack of risk-taking or vision.

In July 2011, my Dad passed away suddenly at the age of 61. I developed really bad anxiety and panic attacks from his passing because it made me realize that death wasn’t just something that happened to someone in their old age, and that I could die at any moment. My doctor put me on Ativan to deal with the anxiety, and I even saw a psychologist for the first time ever. My psychologist recommended that I read “The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook” by Edmund J. Bourne PhD. What a wonderful book! It really helped me get through that difficult time, focus on what I could control, and get back to living normally. I was able to get off the Ativan and didn’t have any more panic attacks. But my fear of dying never truly went away. Fast forward to 2017, and I stumbled across the Wait But Why blog post from Tim Urban entitled “Why Cryonics Makes Sense”. Having only heard about cryonics in sci-fi movies and books, I thought it was a bunch of fantasy nonsense that could never come true. As it turns out, cryonics does make sense. No, the nanotechnology doesn’t exist yet today to revive vitrified (frozen) cryonics patients. But as a technologist and optimist, I definitely believe that one day we’ll get there. Most importantly, if I’m dead and buried (or cremated), I have no chance of ever coming back. But if I do cryonics, I have at least some chance. I signed up for cryonics with Alcor soon after reading Tim’s blog post, and have been a member ever since. The cost is very doable with a properly structured life insurance policy, and I live with the peace of mind knowing that if something were to happen to me, a team of ex-NAVY seals will come to my rescue and preserve my body for potential future reanimation. If you’re curious about cryonics like I was, there’s going to be an awesome cryonics conference in Miami next month. I have no stake or benefit in you attending, other than to help spread the word and get more people excited about the possibility of cryonics. The conference costs very little to attend, and it might just preserve your life. Link to sign up is in the comments below. Hope to see you there! 👇👇👇
