To go off-grid you need either: To be willing to have no power for long periods. Massively overbuild your solar and batteries. Get a large generator and pay a small fortune to keep it running. Only joking, this isn't a choice. You need to do all 3, which will still not be enough in the winter.

Yep, all you need are solar panels and batteries... .... which of course means that this solar+battery house can now be disconnected from the commercial electric grid right? No more need for nuclear or hydro or fossils, right? Go ahead. Disconnect your house. See what happens.
