@TaylorHargis9 @KernCMC @Mathgarden I agree that education should foster happiness. It is true that students are being pushed very hard to learn all the material in order to do well on a test. Once that test is taken, they are asked to quickly move on to the next concept, possibly without complete understanding.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Education should be a place where students can find their own happiness without having to always meet standards. For instance, standardized tests are being pushed so hard to cram in information, but students never truly grasp all the material to carry on to the next grade.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden There are several lessons that can be learned from Finland's education system. They are more concerned with student happiness, play, and exploration rather than test scores and homework. They offer diverse fields of study with the goal that students perform well in all. #EDEL5200

@DEAFinitelyJT @KernCMC @Mathgarden I never thought about it either! Teachers should expect that every student will succeed in class and have high standards for each and every one of them! Teachers should not predetermine that some students will fail. I agree that it does not promote a positive learning environment

@KernCMC @Mathgarden After reading the "Grades are for Onions" chapter I was shocked that I had never really thought about grading on a curve, is just predetermining some of your students will fail. Mind blowing. This does not promote a positive learning environment.

Q2: Grades, rankings, & grading on the curve are traditions heavily embedded in the U.S. Are these practices useful when creating a positive learning environment where collaboration, growth, & productive struggle exist? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Learning is the purpose for teaching students. An education system that emphasizes learning over grades would provide students will a better math experience. Grades are for sorting, not for encouraging. Most teachers in ungraded settings report a rise in understanding. #EDEL5200

Q1: Chris describes an "education world that truly values playfulness, experimentation, & accomplishment over assessment, labels, & separation." How can this education world provide a better maths experience for students? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@JMullich @KernCMC @Mathgarden @MathRecess I agree that patience is much needed. I feel that students no longer find enjoyment in struggling to solve a problem. They want it done right then and there and give up too soon. We definitely need to teach our students independence and patience. These traits will be beneficial.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden We should select math problems for our students that are challenging and fun. We should allow them to make their own discoveries and allow them to struggle. We should teach them to value the problem and give them good experiences that engage their curiosity. #EDEL5200

@GamezSeena @KernCMC @Mathgarden Hi Seena, I agree that games can create fun memories with math. All of those games are great ideas and I think should definitely be utilized, at home or even in the classroom! I feel Monopoly could be very beneficial because it can help students in everyday life (counting money)

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Games that can promote better mathematical memories for our students to play with friends and family is Uno, or chutes and ladders, monopoly, and yahtzee (which is also great for subitizing). #EDEL5200 #mathrecess

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Instruction that is integrated, play-based,and multi sensory captures children's imagination. Play is important to healthy brain development and can help students enjoy math. Students should be given a deeper understanding of math versus passive approaches. #EDEL5200

@KernCMC A mathematically proficient student makes sense of problems and perseveres in solving them, attends to precision, and can reason abstractly and quantitatively. Math Recess can help with proficiency by altering mindsets; it delivers the idea that math is for everyone. #EDEL5200

@Doctor2pi @EddiesClass @teachsci8 @Tech_Buddha @Ststansberry A1) My favorite technology resource is anything Google related. For example, Google docs, forms, classroom, etc. That list could go on forever! EDTE 4200 has introduced me to a lot of those resources. I love how the programs are easy to use and so teacher friendly. #CSUBted
