@Mathgarden @KernCMC Yes!! Gone are the days of competitive, rote memorization, obedient (never questioning) education practices. I grew up in a different time and education was very different. Now is the time for students to be challenged and help them develop a healthy learning curiosity.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden The biggest takeaway for me was the fact that Finland had the guts to implement change. Ironically, the change "for the better" is based off of American ideas. We talk and study the idea of teaching the whole child but Finland has put it into practice.

@CalebCsub @KernCMC @Mathgarden Yes! The portfolio idea is a great tool. If artist use portfolios to show off work it should be the same. Math is an art. True to life we use portfolios to advertise or communicate the things we know and know well.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden A portfolio assignment would be very beneficial. The students would keep their work in a single location where they can view their progress on the assignments/tasks. This portfolio is also beneficial for the idea that the students will be more engaged and collaborative.

Q3: What are some alternatives that educators and leaders can use to replace traditional grades? Why are these alternatives more useful in the creation of an education system that is both social and collaborative? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@KernCMC @Mathgarden After reading the "Grades are for Onions" chapter I was shocked that I had never really thought about grading on a curve, is just predetermining some of your students will fail. Mind blowing. This does not promote a positive learning environment.

Q2: Grades, rankings, & grading on the curve are traditions heavily embedded in the U.S. Are these practices useful when creating a positive learning environment where collaboration, growth, & productive struggle exist? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@JMullich @KernCMC @Mathgarden @MathRecess BINGO! Your comment that we live in a world of instant gratification is spot on. Taking your comment one step further, it seems everything needs to be fast to be efficient. Not true. As the book mentioned we need to give kids good math problems then "get out of their way".

@KernCMC @Mathgarden The five principles are: 1. Start with a question. 2. Students need time to struggle. 3. You are not the answer key. 4. Say Yes to your students' ideas. 5. Play!!! These principles help to validate students thinking and ideas by allowing them to be curious about numbers.

@EricaChristole2 @GamezSeena @KernCMC @Mathgarden Erica, I agree that Monopoly is a great game to teach everyday math things. It teaches us about numbers, money sense, and PATIENCE.... Although, in my family Monopoly rarely ended without controversy. Great memories though. : )

@GamezSeena @KernCMC @Mathgarden Hi Seena, I agree that games can create fun memories with math. All of those games are great ideas and I think should definitely be utilized, at home or even in the classroom! I feel Monopoly could be very beneficial because it can help students in everyday life (counting money)

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Some games that come to mind for me that promote mathematical memories are: Yahtzee, Uno, Crazy eights, Trouble, and dominoes. Naming these games I may be giving up my age.

@HangingwithMrJ @KernCMC @WrightMath314 Yes! Very good point about slowing down. I agree that if they don't know the answer it's ok to say they don't know. Showing different ways to look at problems is a very important.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 Slow down. Share different methods and encourage safe places that allows for collaboration. If you dont get a problem, its ok to show that you dont understand it. Even as an adult im hesitant to share answers cause i dont think its right.

@KernCMC A1: I think Math Recess should be fun and engaging. It should be relevant and have real world applications. A kindergarten mindset helps to engage the students in trying to understand the "why?" it works mentality.
