What happens when kids are in a balanced literacy classroom? Let me show you with a real example, a warm, bright, articulate 3rd-grader I recently started tutoring. Here are the child's assessment results: 17/21 consonant sounds 3/5 short vowel sounds 3/10 digraphs 8/10 real CVC words read correctly 4/10 nonsense CVC words read correctly 225/240 high-frequency words read accurately and automatically 3/6 correct spelling of CVC words 0/4 correct spelling of CVCC/CCVC words This child is kind, curious, and highly verbal. He/she wants to be a scientist. He/she can explain how he/she wants to build a robot that won’t malfunction. But you know how he/she actually reads words? By pure memorization. By guessing based on the first or last sound. Not because he/she is lazy. Not because he/she is “behind.” But because he/she was never taught how to decode. This is not a student problem. This is a system problem. Every child I tutor is just like this.💔 A travesty.
