@EruditeDM It's interesting, because I read an article before that suggested that he was attempting to distance himself from Sherlock Holmes in order to focus more on his historical fiction.

Today marks the 167th natal anniversary of the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose masterful fiction has entertained readers since the late 1800s. He created Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective who remains a recognizable household name to today. The character was so popular in the 1890s, that when Doyle tried to kill him off, public outcry was so great that he brought him back. The Hound of the Baskervilles is a personal favorite of mine. He also created Professor Challenger, an irascible scientist who explores lost worlds populated by prehistoric beasts and savage ape-men. These are my favorite stories by Doyle, evoking the primordial style of pulp fiction stories later to come. His historical fiction is also quite entertaining, and written in a style that emulates earlier writers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. I remember quite fondly The White Company and Sir Nigel. Are you a fan of Doyle's work?
