@EsperanceAdy @DogWhoReads @brown_book_bug How long ago? I was assigned The Joy Luck Club, The Woman Destroyed, Silent Spring, The Left Hand of Darkness, Siddartha, and Henry V in my freshman seminar 35 years ago. Any one of those would destroy a matriculating freshman at the last uni I taught at.

@EsperanceAdy @brown_book_bug And they assigned Dante’s Inferno, Paradise Lost, The Everlasting Man, and The Lord of the Rings in your introductory literature courses? As an English/lit major I find that very hard to believe.

I miss old academic twitter and the twitterstorians before the big musky sale & deliberate disintegration of actual communities on here. I learned SO much from so many folk. And got multiple opportunities from connecting w scholars on here.

Part of feminism is admitting that you’re a bird about certain shit and working to unlearn it. All of us got a lil chirpy chirp you just gotta rage against the birdness

booktwt really needs to take a long hard look at what it’s doing because it’s not normal for the authors of the books it’s currently discoursing about to have to go on here and explain the books to the audience like they’re 5 years old. for a community that prides itself on

When people are like “you shouldn’t exclusively read fanfiction” it’s like yes you are objectively right. But take it a step further. You shouldn’t exclusively read any form of fiction. Different genres teach new rhythms and skills— we should all diversify our reading habits!!

“Yes, the Brontës’ implied reader was educated, English and at least bourgeois, but the BookToker’s implied reader is exclusionary, too,” writes @writingenjoyer.“The reader whose affective register is foreign to the book’s finds nothing in it.” thepointmag.com/criticism/comm…

A major reason that it didn’t make sense to use AI to write an essay about a substantive topic is that until you write the essay you don’t actually know what you want to say or what you think. You think you do, but it is the writing itself that actually gets the thinking done.
