I was assigned The Joy Luck Club, The Woman Destroyed, Silent Spring, The Left Hand of Darkness, Siddartha, and Henry V in my freshman seminar 35 years ago. Any one of those would destroy a matriculating freshman at the last uni I taught at.

If schools and universities refuse to teach the great books of the West, we will do it ourselves. We started an independent group to study the Great Texts of the Western canon, together. ...and we are now 600 members strong! 🙌 What should we add to our reading list??

As an English/lit major I find that very hard to believe.

When you were 21 you drank rail and whatever was cheapest……at 30 youre not drinking rail anymore and your using that as the new metric for drink prices.

Reminder that Diamond's book starts with him claiming that there are no differences in intelligence between peoples, but that indigenous New Guineans are nonetheless "genetically superior" and smarter than whites, and that these facts are only suppressed by white racism.

Jared Diamond was the first person to attempt to give a comprehensive multi disciplinary explanation for how the west became dominant that wasn't just aryan mysticism. He got things wrong and people have done better since but he undoubtedly elevated our historical understanding
