Russian fighters who have taken part in the aggression against Ukraine have no place in Europe. They pose a direct threat to Europe’s internal security. They have recent combat experience. Many were recruited from prison. Europe must urgently prevent their entry into the EU and Schengen. Ahead of #EUCO, eight European leaders call on the European Commission to address this issue at EU level.

After 82 years, a powerful symbol of Estonia’s fight for freedom is finally coming home. 🇪🇪 In September 1944, as Soviet forces advanced on Tallinn, a young Estonian, Eugen Vilder, climbed the flagpole at Kadriorg Palace and rescued the Estonian flag so it would not fall into Soviet hands. For decades, that very flag was preserved far from home in Australia. The blue-black-white had flown over Kadriorg for only a few brief days during the government of Otto Tief — a fragile moment of Estonian independence between the collapse of Nazi occupation and the arrival of Soviet rule. Now, more than eight decades later, the flag returns to Estonia as a reminder of courage, resistance, and the unbroken will of a nation that refused to forget its freedom.

What was framed as a “liberation mission” was, in reality, a campaign of destruction: around 760 people were killed, 600 wounded, 2000 buildings reduced to rubble, and more than 20,000 residents left without shelter. As a member of the @UN_HRC, Estonia 🇪🇪 remains committed to closing these gaps so that everyone, regardless of gender, can enjoy the same rights and opportunities worldwide. When women are empowered, entire communities and nations move forward.

82 years ago today, the Soviet Air Force began the bombing of the Estonian city of Narva. Between 6–8 March 1944, 1,322 sorties dropped around 1,600 tonnes of bombs, destroying the historic baroque city. The same imperial evil continues today in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
