After 82 years, a powerful symbol of Estonia’s fight for freedom is finally coming home. 🇪🇪 In September 1944, as Soviet forces advanced on Tallinn, a young Estonian, Eugen Vilder, climbed the flagpole at Kadriorg Palace and rescued the Estonian flag so it would not fall into Soviet hands. For decades, that very flag was preserved far from home in Australia. The blue-black-white had flown over Kadriorg for only a few brief days during the government of Otto Tief — a fragile moment of Estonian independence between the collapse of Nazi occupation and the arrival of Soviet rule. Now, more than eight decades later, the flag returns to Estonia as a reminder of courage, resistance, and the unbroken will of a nation that refused to forget its freedom.

82 years ago today, the Soviet Air Force began the bombing of the Estonian city of Narva. Between 6–8 March 1944, 1,322 sorties dropped around 1,600 tonnes of bombs, destroying the historic baroque city. The same imperial evil continues today in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

#BoycottRussianSport Already 11 countries – Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Ukraine, together with the EU, are boycotting the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics-2026 at the official level. The decision came after the International Paralympic Committee allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags and with their anthems at potential medal ceremonies. Allowing state symbols of the aggressors at an international sporting event is unacceptable while Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, supported by Belarus, continues.  Your solidarity matters. It sends a clear message: sport must stand for peace, fairness, and respect for international law.

The death of Ayatollah Khamenei opens a window for the Iranian people to determine their own future. For decades, the regime has ruled through fear, brutal repression, international destabilisation, including its nuclear and missile programme, and support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. Iran’s future must belong to its people, not a narrow ideological elite. Pressure must continue until aggression abroad and oppression at home end. Today at the EU’s extraordinary Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting we will discuss the situation in the Middle East, resuming diplomatic efforts and strengthening pressure on Russia and its enablers.

Estonia is providing €11 million to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and ammunition under NATO’s PURL initiative. Russia’s attempts to break Ukraine’s resolve have failed. We will continue to bolster its resilience on the battlefield and its position at the negotiating table.

On #Estonia’s Independence Day, we gathered to honor the Estonian and Finnish volunteers who fought for each other’s independence and freedom. Their sacrifice lives on and we will always remember.
